It is the second time in the last
month that the community of Walton
has been shocked by the sudden
death of one of its own.
A tragic motor-vehicle crash
claimed the life of Bob Blake. Our
deepest sympathies are extended to
wife Clara and children Kerry, her
husband Andrew, Christopher and
Devin. They are also extended to the
Blake and Wasson families.
The Blake and McDonald families
have resided in Morris for over 56
years. The kids walked, rode bikes,
then bussed to school together.
Karin McDonald recalls that the
boys loved to tease her, especially
Bob because he sat behind her in
school and was the same age.
When I married moved to Walton
in 1977, it was a week after Bob and
Clara were married and settled in
their home. Learning everyone’s
name and remembering them takes
time and there were a lot of Blakes.
Rick would talk about “Ben” and I
thought which one was he? It took a
while but finally the secret was out
that Bob was “Ben” and not another
member of George and Marie’sfamily. Many will remember Bob in his“wilder days” as many of us were, but he grew into a man of passions,in my opinion. A passion forfarming he shared with his fatherand brothers. A passion for hisfamily. He supported the boys in theirhockey and motocross careers. The
family even provided a retreat for
them at the farm, to have a place for
them and their friends and a quiet
place for the family to enjoy a
getaway.
Of course, Kerry was Daddy’s
little girl and when it came to her
wedding, he just agreed.
He also had a passion for
snowmobiles. A member of the B-W
Trailblazers, Bob would help stake
out the trails and talk to landowners.
It was a job to be done and he would
do it.
We will miss the visits with Bob,
when he would stop in for eggs or be
stopped in the middle of the road
and the men would chat about
farming. We will miss his wave, the
many, many times we would pass on
the road going back and forth
between farms.
We have lost a good man, a good
neighbour and a good friend.
We wish a speedy recovery to Bob
Dalton as he is a patient in Wingham
hospital.
A social evening was held for
bride-to-be Marnie Dingman at
River’s Edge golf course at
Cranbrook. Members of the ballteams, broomball team and otherfriends joined together to golf andhave a fun evening. Marnie wasdecorated with a lovely tiara, veiland boa for her golfing evening andappreciated the wonderful evening.Motocross was held at the Leefarm for the last time in 2007. OnSaturday the Vet National was heldfor riders who rode in the plus 30,
plus 40 and plus 50-year-old classes.
Sunday was a normal race day with
over 300 entries. It was a good day
as it was the perfect temperature for
racing and the rain seemed to go
around Walton.
There was a fantastic turnout for
the buck and doe for Matt Shortreed
and Julie Moffat. The wedding party
and parents were dressed in
opposing t-shirts emblazened with
Team Case and Team John Deere.
It was a great time. Congrats to the
couple whose wedding is in October.
Congrats to Geraldine Siemon on
the birth of grandson Jonathon.
Proud parents are Andrea and Rick
Moyer.
Brian and Linda Marks from
Calgary have been visiting with
mom Maxine and family. Linda has
returned but Brian stayed on for
another week.
Mike, Chrissy and Sydney
Warwick have also returned to
Calgary after having a two-week
visit with mom Karin McDonald
Calhoun. Rick and Jo-Ann along wit
LeeAnn, Scott and Alicia spent the
morning with them last week and
went for a short boat ride. With hernew lifejacket and sailor hat, three-year-old Sydney loved it.Opening night of the story ofStompin’ Tom Connors at BlythFestival was an enjoyable evening. Agift of tickets I received was used byme and Betty McCallum. We sawlots of other Walton folks includingKen and Judy Shortreed, Dave andBrenda Linton, Ray and Janice
Becker and lots of other area folk. It
was a good show, if you enjoy
music, and a very interesting story
behind the man.
Celebrating birthdays last week
included Andrew Kruse, George
Blake, Sarah Humphries, Cindy
Poland, Justin Shortreed, Brenda
Linton, Tim Fritz, Katrin Godkin,
Karen Carter, Nancy Gillis, Jaden
Shortreed, Lisa Stevenson, Brian
Alcock, Anne Ryan, Rosanna
Grobbink, and Kevin Dunbar.
The Walton Indians slopitch team
participated in the Winthrop Men’s
Slopitch League year-end
tournament held at Holmesville
parks last weekend.
They played Friday evening
against Clinton and won 18-12.
Saturday morning the McKillop
Louts went down in defeat to them
by a score of 14-13.
The third game on Saturday saw
them lose 12-5 in their first loss of
the true double knock-out
tournament. Playing again Saturday
night against the Winthrop Oilers
they won 19-5 to play on.
The next opposition was the
Winthrop Young Guns and a victory
of 15-2 was gained.
The two teams remaining with one
loss apiece meant a rematch of the
Walton Indians against the Winthrop
Young Guns.
This time the Indians weren’t so
lucky and lost 12-2 finishing as A
runners-up.
Members of the Walton Indians
include Robbie McClure, Greg
Medd, Jeff Linton, Steve Carnochan,
Barry Young, Joel Oliver, Brian
Dolmage, Kevin Murray, Steve
Henderson, Joe Nesbitt, Jason
Denys, Chris and Devin Blake
(absent).
Congrats to the boys on a great
year.
Kickin’ up dirt
The Thresher Reunion in Blyth wasn’t the only place in the
area drawing people here last weekend. Motocross was
alive and well in Walton with a healthy bill of competitors
hitting the dirt last Saturday for some tough competition on
a scorching hot day. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Thank You
Thank you to everyone who came out and made our
Grand Opening a huge success. The numbers were way
beyond our expectations and we certainly appreciate each
and everyone’s support. A big thank you to all those who
worked so hard at the store to make everything come
together in such a short time and also to the individuals
and businesses who sent the beautiful planters for our
opening.
We are pleased to announce that because of your
generous donations to our BBQ, both Walton Little School
and Brussels Minor Hockey will receive a much
appreciated boost.

Well, you do.
You (yes, you!) can fight cancer by becoming
a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society.
All you need to do is spend three hours selling
daffodils or canvassing door to door, and you’ll be
helping us fund research to help more Canadians
survive cancer. And that’s a powerful thing.
Three hours for you, a lifetime to a cancer survivor.
To volunteer, visit cancer.ca/volunteerpower
or contact your local Canadian Cancer
Society office.
Did you know you have
cancer-fighting powers?
