By Ellen Jefferson
Meeting five of the Wawanosh
Powerful Players was held on
Saturday, Sept. 1, at the Belgrave
park.
President, Madison MacLean,
opened the meeting with the pledge
and led roll call. Mary Ellen Foran
led the discussion about the
difference and the responsibilities of
sport officials.
Ellen Jefferson demonstrated the
difference between objective and
subjective decisions officials
make.
She had members judge Reba
Jefferson, Jillian Martin and
Madison MacLean walking on a
skipping rope with style (subjective)
and judge whether the ball landed in
or about (objective). Officials must
make quick decisions to keep the
game moving.
Sophie Jefferson passed out an
activity and couch potato indicator
that members had to fill out to see
how much time they spent doing
physical activities, rather than being
a couch potato.
Fortunately, most members had
more points for the physical activity
section.
Tina Drennan, Meagan and
Melissa Higgins, and Maisy
Jefferson ran a game of flag football.
Meagan led the stretches, and
Maisy and Tina led warm-up
activities.
Tina divided up the teams
and taught the members how to
play.
It was the Red Rovers against the
Violenators. It ended with Carrie
Logtenberg scoring a final
touchdown for the Violenators,
making it a tie.
The next meeting will be on Sept.
13 at the Auburn Missionary Church
for a game of volleyball.
ChildFind was the recipient of
this year’s Londesborough Angels
charity baseball tournament.
Games began on Friday night in
both Auburn and Londesborough
baseball diamonds as teams
competed in a friendly game of
baseball. Terry Smith from
ChildFind began the game with the
opening pitch at the Londesborough
diamond.
All day Saturday teams came and
went as the semi-finals and final
games arrived.
Winning the A championship was
the Lucky 13 team with the Tator
Tots a close second.
All nine teams made it a
memorable and charitable weekend
by donating their winnings back to
ChildFind putting the total to
$1,630.

Nice pick-up
To kick off this year’s Londesborough Angels charity
tournament, the Tall Oaks took on the Dinner Club last
Friday night. The weather was cold, windy and rain was on
the way, but everyone was out playing hard for this year’s
charity, ChildFind Ontario. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

Terry Smith, education and
volunteer development co-
ordinator for ChildFind Ontario,
had the honour of throwing out
the first pitch last Friday to
open this year’s Londes-

took the field Sept. 7 and 8,
raising money for the cause.

There were 17 out for seniors
golf competition and lunch at the
Wingham golf course on
Wednesday.
The format this week was Hi-
Low Partners with the top half low
handicaps paired with one of the
higher handicaps by random draw
made by golf operations manager
Dave Meriam.
By using the red tees on holes
two, three and seven the length of
competition was decreased by 150
yards.
More than one golfer found the
red tees on number three brought
the maple trees in play. Many a ball
bounced off a tree making for a
difficult second shot.
There was a real battle for top
spot. The team of Bob Johnston
and Bill Brown were the winners
with a combined score of 88. One
shot behind with a total of 89 were
Ray Walker and newcomer Harry
George. In third spot with a total of
96 was the team of Roly Kaufman
and Glenn McMichael.
Garfield Lawrence won the
award for the longest putt on
number six and Roly Kaufman had
good iron control and won the
award for closest to the pin on
number two.
It was interesting that no one was
able to par the seventh hole from
the red ties. Two birdies were
recorded both by Bob Johnston on
holes two and nine.
***
Numbers were down for
Wednesday men’s with only 11 on
hand. Don Rae won the low gross
with a 39. There was a tie for low
net between Trevor Machan and
Mark Underwood. Jason LeRoux
had the only birdie of the night with
a two on the fourth hole. Pin
awards were won by Zack
O’Krafka on number two and Don
Rae on number eight.
***
Nights are getting shorter, so
there were only 18 out for
Thursday men’s golf. Bill
Robinson won low gross with a 40
with Teeswater’s Dave Gamble’s
43 good for second low gross.
Nice to see some new names
taking some of the awards as Russ
Danbrook won the award for
closest to the pin on number four
and Gerry Edwards sinking the
longest putt on number eight.
Winner of the hidden score award
was John Nicholson.
***
The course crew, with Bruce
Pewtress at the helm, have certainly
been busy. Have you seen the
additional tees on holes one, two,
four, seven, eight and nine? With
constant watering most seem to
have a good catch of grass.
Gone is the sand trap behind the
seventh hole as it has been replaced
by a berm. Did you notice the berm
behind number eight has
disappeared as the soil was used for
the foundation of the new tee on
number two?
***
The fall fundraising barbecue
sponsored by the curlers, will be
held on Sept. 23. Tickets are
available from the curlers or the pro
shop.
