Hughson also shared his experiences as a member of the Festival company over several seasons. (Vicky Bremner photo) At the July 4 meeting county councillors approved a recommendation for the establishing of a Huron Heritage Fund. At the Aug. 8 meeting of the committee of the whole, councillors debated the request from Huron East for financial assistance with the cost of restoration of the memorial gates and posts at Vanastra. Discussion at that time included reference to work on the Tiger Dunlop Tomb. There was a request for a report on all historical sites in Huron. County council approved several recommendation at the March meeting, and included $20,000 in the budget. The recommendations were that a fund be established with an annual contribution to the county levy, as well as a procees to encourage donations. Also policies and procedures would be developed to invite applications on an annual basis for support from the fund with the intention of preserving the county’s heritage. One priority mentioned in the policy and procedure section raised a question from Central Huron councillor John Bezaire. At issue was the section which stated priorities will include, but are not limited to project located within the County of Huron. Bezaire wondered what kind of project outside the county might be approved. Director of cultural services Beth Ross suggested something like a history book which was being printed outside the county. “But most tangible things I can’t imagine would be approved.” She said she anticipated there would be a weighting system of evaluation for any application and something outside the county “would have to have pretty high significance.” A night for the players It was a special night of Blyth Spirit on July 11 as a cocktail reception at the Thresher’s Shed followed the matinee performance of Eyes of Heaven. Artistic director Eric Coates was emcee for the evening’s entertainment and gave a message on new play development. From left: Coates, and actors Michelle Fisk, Darren Keay and Rebecca Auerbach.
