On July 12, Sparling’s field was
the scene for a game between
Blyth’s two U-13 co-ed soccer
teams. Blyth Thunder and Lightning
met head-to-head for a friendly, yet
competitive, game of soccer.
This match would be the final
regular season game for both teams,
before heading off to the year-end
tournament in Lucknow July 25 -
28.
In the first half, Josh Raynard
covered the net for the Lightning and
Wyatt Bearss for the Thunder. In the
first period, the Thunder’s Steffen
Vellenga got past Lightning’s
defence and scored the only goal of
the game.
Both teams changed their goalies
at half-time with Conner Prescott
suiting up for the Lightning and
Jessica Tyler stood in for the
Thunder. E
ach of these goalies made some
great saves to stop either team from
adding any points to their
scoreboard. There were some great
plays from both teams, but the
defence stood strong in both ends
and didn’t let the ball go into the
mesh.
The final whistle blew and Blyth
Thunder was declared the winner,
with 1-0 score.
Thunder’s coach Joost VanDorp
and Lightning’s coaches Peter Uyl
and Colin Bokhout were pleased
with their team’s final game.
With weeks of no rain Brussels U-
10 did a rain dance to win all their
games in the Wingham tournament.
The first game was against
Listowel. It was a tough one but
Mitch Kellington scored late in the
game to give Brussels its first win.
The team next came up against
Paisley. Brussels stepped it up and
won 4-0. Wyatt Ducharme, scored
assisted by Seth Nichol. Lexi Smith
assisted by Carl Dow, was next to
put one between the posts. The
nicest goal of the day was when
Ducharme did a fancy pass to Logan
Kellington.
The third game Brussels didn’t
slow down. It seemed the more rain
and wind the harder they worked.
Ripley didn’t have a chance. The
first goal was by Patrick Franken
assisted by Eric VanNess. Ducharme
scored again. Alyssa Cronin scored
assisted by Lexi Smith. Ducharme
scored two more assisted by Tyler
Cronin and Nathan Armstrong.
Stephanie Hummell and Carl Dow
each got a goal.
The game was eventually called
due to rain with a final score of 7-0.
In the finals it was Listowel
against Brussels. There was no rest
for the kids and it was still raining.
Brussels went out fighting but
Listowel scored in the first half.
Brussels didn’t get rattled.
Ducharme put his old mighty shot
high in the corner.
They went into five-minute
overtime. Brussels poured on the
power and scored to bring home the
gold.
Brussels U-10 goalie gets big
thanks for getting three shut-outs
and letting in only one goal all day.
The Brussels U-10s travelled to
Listowel. A little rain didn’t stop the
mighty squad as Brussels stayed
strong the whole game and really
worked together as a team.
Goals were scored by Carl Dow
with two, assisted by Lexi Smith and
Cody Rathwell; Dalen Martin with
two, assisted by Dow and Katie
McFarlane; Lexi Smith with one
assisted by Tim Waechter and
Delayna Smith and Scott Dolmage.
The final score was 7-0.
The last game of the season is July
16.

The seniors at the Wingham golf
course are beginning to wonder
why the weatherman forecasts rain
for Wednesday as such has been
the case the last three weeks. Once
again threatening rain kept the
numbers down with only 11 on
hand for Wednesday’s senior golf.
Wayne Gordon continued his
winning ways and took top award.
Tied for second were Bill Deans
and Ray Walker. The only birdie of
the day was recorded by Grant
Currie on the ninth hole.
***
Men’s night saw 18 golfers
hitting the links. With four pars and
a birdie on number three, John
Dailleboust came in with a 38 for
top honours. Roger Keay was one
stroke behind with a 39 for second
low gross and Trevor Hopf’s 41
was good for third low gross. Low
net honours went to Blyth’s Mike
Henry with second spot to Kent
McPherson and third low net to
Dan McBurney.
Pin awards went to Eric Hopf on
number three, John Dailleboust on
number six and Zack O’Krafka on
number eight. John Dailleboust
won a skin for his birdie on number
three. Rob Gallaher won a skin on
number four being the only one to
par the fourth hole – once again
proving those par threes at the
Wingham course are tough. Doug
Neil’s birdie on number nine was
good enough to get a pin award.
***
Buff’s Thursday gang had 26
golfers on hand. There was a tie for
top spot as Shawn Walker and
Dave Gamble came in with 41s.
There was a tie for third with Brett
Martin and Bill Robinson both
having 43s. Rob Gallaher won the
award for the longest putt on
number five and Bill Robinson was
closest to the pin on number nine.
Hidden score award was won by
Dennis Knox.

and Carolyn Schofield downed
Judy Cullen. In a battle of the
Carols, Carol Oriold defeated
Carol Clark. Caroline Greenaway
defeated Linda Walker and Fern
Wylie advanced to the second
round with a win over Karin Fish.
Maxine Robinson and Janet Haines
took the easy route to the second
round with both having byes.

tourney, with proceeds for doctor
recruitment was a huge success.
