Brussels U-8 IIs played Wallace in
recent soccer action.
The team thought they had their
work cut out for them, but Delayna
Smith started the scoring early in the
first period with Leanne Exel
assisting. Smith put on the heat a
couple more times with Dean
Scarrow and Hudson Smith
assisting.
Wallace got two past by Jake
Mitchell, but that would be all.
Devin Bachert scored with Nathan
Bachert assisting then Smith scored
again with Cody Harding assisting.
D. Bachert finished the game with
Lorren Pollard assisting.
The final score was 6-2 for
Brussels.
Blyth’s U-15 boys played an
outstanding game of soccer on
Wednesday, June 27 against
Lucknow I, on the Sparling field.
Blyth was first to get a goal after
Matt Steele crossed the ball over to
Brandon Shaff who made a nice kick
into Lucknow’s net.
Austin Sjaarda made a nice pass to
his teammate, fellow forward Brent
Drost, who headed the ball into the
net to widen the lead.
Blyth must have tired out in the
latter part of the half as Lucknow
scored two goals to tie up the match.
On the second goal, keeper Kurtis
Kolkman unfortunately, fell as he
scrambled for the ball and Lucknow
tipped it into the open net.
Jessie Pot worked the ball up the
field for an assist on the next Blyth
goal.
Shaff booted the ball into the
Lucknow net for his second goal of
the game.
Lucknow scored two more goals
to win the match 4-3.
It was a close game and Blyth
made an amazing 56 shots on the
Lucknow net during the game. The
halfbacks and forwards made some
fantastic passes and were working
really well together to get all those
shots on Lucknow.
Although the score doesn’t always
reflect how a team plays, coaches
felt this was one of their best games
of the season.
Kolkman was named Man of the
Match for making some great saves
to keep his team in the game. Micah
Nonkes and Shaff earned honourable
mention for their outstanding efforts
in this soccer match.

The Blyth Lightning took on the
Blyth Thunder in U-11 soccer action
last week.
It was a hot and sticky night for
soccer but the players put on a good
show. There was a lot of mid-field
action in the first half and a lot of
tight defense.
Thunder goalie Evan Kickert did a
good job of stopping the Lightning
offense. The Thunder scored first
with Quintin Sjaarda passing up to
Rick Pot to score.
The Thunder kept up the offense
in the second half with Alex Peters
racing in on net to score.
The Lightning responded after
several misses, Megan Hoggart
scored thanks to the hard work of
Mackenzie Nesbitt who beat the
defender to get the ball to Hoggart.
Lightning struck again with Ryan
Nesbitt scoring and Hoggart and
Trystan Weber assisting.
The Thunder also had its chances
and Sjaarda scored to put his team
back in the lead.
The Lightning tied it when Weber
and R. Nesbitt rushed in from centre
and Nesbitt scored his second
goal.
The Thunder kept the offense up
but Lightning goalie Tyler Boven
stood them up and the tie held.
Lightning, Thunder clash.
Blyth contest ends in tie
With the weatherman forecasting
heavy rain and huge thunderstorms
it kept several from the Wednesday
men’s steak night. However 38
were out for golf action and the
needed rain did not materialize.
Both flights saw two teams tied
for top spot with the winners
declared by retrogression.
In the A flight the declared
winner, with a five under score of
30, was the team of Mark Hackett,
Joel Riley, Trevor Machan and his
uncle Dan Campbell.
Runner-up in A flight went to the
team of Dave Meriam, Justin Peters
and Mike Henry.
In the B flight the declared
winner, with a two under par score
of 33, was the team of Chris
Michie, Al Godfrey, Brian Marston
and John Kuyvenhoven.
Runner-up in B flight went to the
team of Wayne Gordon, Clayt
Ruppel, Wayne Johnston and his
uncle Bill, also with a two under
par score of 33.
Closest to the pin awards went to
Trevor Hopf on number two, John
Dailleboust on number four and
Justin Peters on number eight.
The team of Gordon, Ruppel and
the Johnstons, won skins with a
three on the third hole and a two on
the fourth hole. On the third hole
Gordon put the second shot close to
the pin for an easy tap in.
On hole number four it didn’t
look good for the team as the best
drive was short of the left trap and
with the pin on the lower right side,
it looked like it was going to be
tough to get even a par. But a
perfect chip by super senior Ruppel
saw the ball hit the green, roll down
the hill into the cup and the cheers
of achievement could be heard at
the clubhouse.
The two-man team of Kevin
Green and John Dailleboust won a
skin for a three on the sixth hole.
Although the team of Peters,
Meriam and Henry won a skin for
an eagle two on number nine it was
actually a solo effort. Peters, keeper
of the corded cage for the AHL
Albany River Rats, bombed one
from the tree up over the first hill
and put his second shot right in the
cup.
Justin is not only a great
goaltender but pretty good golfer.
In hockey he keeps the puck out of
the net but in golf doesn’t seem to
have any problem in putting that
little white ball in the small hole.
Well done, Justin.

Last Monday, June 25 former
Wingham Golf and Curling
manager Ron Knight dropped in to
the clubhouse for a visit. Nice to
see Ron again.

There was one short of two dozen
out for Thursday night golf.
Terry Powell continues to have
the hot clubs and hits the leader
board with a 36. Doug Gamble was
in fine form taking second spot
with a 38. Tied for third with 40s
were Kent McPherson and Doug
VanderWoude. Dave Gamble was a
double winner as he was the closest
to the pin on number eight.
The award for the longest putt on
number three went to Kent
McPherson. Russ Danbrook won
the hidden score award.

Many of the club members were
saddened to hear of the death of
former, very popular member
Wally Schill who died peacefully at
Billings Court Manor, Burlington
on Sunday, June 24 at the age of
91.
For years Wally was a regular at
the course and in his 80s he played
18 holes, seven days a week, week
after week. He was one of the first
on the course, often even before
winter departed and on more than
one occasion played well into
December. In fact I had the
privilege of playing with Wally no
less than 16 days in December in
1998.
Wally was liked by young and
old. More than one youngster has
been thrilled when they played with
Wally and got to ride with him in
the golf cart – a real treat at a young
age.
Wally played golf by the rules –
“play the ball as it lies”. The hole is
not finished until the ball hits the
bottom of the cup. Wally’s rule was
“putt it out, if you pick it up you
count two.”
As mentioned in the paper “when
Wally wasn’t cheering on the
Teeswater Bantam team he could
be found on the 19th hole at the
Wingham Golf Course.”
Winter or summer on Friday
Wally could be found at the club at
lunch – he did enjoy Sue’s famous
Friday fish dinners.
We who knew Wally, were very
fortunate to have crossed paths
with him. His strength and spirit
certainly made a great difference in
our lives.

It hasn’t taken golf operations
manager Dave Meriam long to
master the Wingham nine. Last
Saturday playing with the weekend
early birds. Dave shot an 18-hole
score of 68, two under par.
***
Remember this Saturday, July 7
is the match putting left-hand
golfers against right-hand golfers.
At stake is the lefty/righty trophy,
but more importantly the winner
gets bragging rights for the next 12
months.

On June 27 the ladies had a very
successful tourney with proceeds
for the Huron County Women’s
Shelter. Fifty-six ladies took to the
links for a day of fun. After nine
holes the ladies enjoyed a feast in
the clubhouse. It was a fun day and
prizes were awarded by random
draws.
