Blyth Lightning’s co-ed U-13
soccer team travelled to Brussels to
play their weekly game on May 24.
It was a very close game during the
first half, with both teams gaining
control of the ball, but unable to
score.
Blyth had several shots on
Brussels that either hit the crossbar,
skimmed past the side of the net or
that were stopped and picked up by
the goalie.
Blyth had a fantastic scoring
opportunity with a penalty shot,
when Brussels was called for a
handball in their crease, but it didn’t
work out for Blyth.
It was an all-girls forward line that
finally got Blyth on the scoreboard.
Morgan Bos had possession of the
ball and booted it across the field to
Marijke Oudshoorn, who turned and
kicked the ball right into the
Brussels net. At halftime it was a
close game with Blyth ahead by one
goal.
The girls line showed some
fantastic teamwork to get the next
goal. Sheree Uyl and Morgan Bos
passed the ball up the field and set
up the play for Madison Sjaarda.
She gave a hard kick at the ball and
it sailed right into the net.
This goal seemed to give the team
a boost of energy and Blyth really
showed some great soccer skills and
enthusiasm. Halfback, Averly
Kikkert made a nice pass up the field
to Greg Roetcisoender for his first
goal of the season. Micah Nonkes
booted the ball up the field to Uyl for
her first goal. The boys made the
next goal happen after Hunter Broda
booted the ball across the field and
Roetcisoender kicked the ball into
the net for his second goal of the
night. Sjaarda earned the final goal
of the game on her own after getting
the ball away from the opposition.
The final score was a 6-0 win for
Blyth Lightning.
Connor Prescott played in net for
three quarters of the game and Josh
Raynard finished it as Blyth’s
keeper. Both boys did a great job
covering the net to earn a shutout
against the opposition. It was
definitely a team effort to win this
game.
Coach Peter Uyl said the team
played a well-positioned game.
“Each member of the team played
the game to the best of their abilities
and did what was expected of them.”

Blyth U-15 boys travelled to
Seaforth to play St. Columban on
Wednesday, May 23.
It was a very warm night and the
Blyth boys played an exceptional
game despite the heat. St. Columban
played an aggressive game that
Blyth wasn’t quite ready for.
Blyth definitely outshot their
opponents during the first half, using
their speed and skills to dribble and
volley the ball up and down the
pitch. Every time they got past St.
Columban’s defence, however, the
goalie saved the day and stopped
Blyth from getting on the
scoreboard.
Midway through the second half,
Blyth’s defence got caught playing
ahead and couldn’t get back in time
to help out the goalie. St. Columban
shot the ball right into Blyth’s net,
taking a one-goal lead. With just
minutes left in the game, Blyth’s
goalie came out and dove for the
ball. His opponents got the ball out
of his arms and scored a goal.
The game ended with a score of 2-
0 for St. Columban. This was
Blyth’s first loss of the season.
Blyth’s coaches were very proud
of their team’s game this week.
“They stood up impressively to this
aggressive team. The defence and
halfbacks worked hard to get the ball
up to their strikers for a chance to
score.
Blyth played a strong game and
should be proud of the good
sportsmanship in which they played
this game.”
Blyth was awarded one hand
penalty. The kicker aimed for the top
corner, but unfortunately the ball
went up and over the net. Jacob
VanDorp had a great night covering
the net for Blyth. He really helped
his team stay in the game.
Austin Sjaarda received the
Man-of-the-Match award for
this impressive throw-in
performance. Honourable mention
went to strikers, Jessie Pot and Brent
Drost.
The Blyth Lightning U-11 soccer
team played against Bayfield
Tuesday night, May 22.
The Lightning played well
offensively game keeping Bayfield
in their own end for a lot of the
game.
Trystan Weber struck first for the
Lightning, with some good passing
to get Weber in the clear, he broke
for the net and made a good shot for
a goal. Ryan Nesbitt got the second
goal, again with some nice passing
to give him a clean run to the net.
Then Megan Hoggart outran the
Bayfield defense to score the
Lightning’s third goal.
The Carey brothers teamed up to
score as Dalton got the ball up to
Wyatt who shot for the net.
Wyatt also scored on a corner kick
that deflected off a Bayfield
defender.
Dalton scored a second time as
well, keeping pace with his brother.
Tyler Boven held the net duties in
the first half keeping Bayfield
scoreless.
Carlene Bremner took over in the
second half and had to make a few
saves to keep the Lightning shut
out.
