The ladies of the Walton
Women’s Institute held their
meeting on the road last
week.
They started off by heading
to DJ’s Furniture for a tour of
the facility. They continued
on to Roadside 23 Cafe for
lunch, then were off again.
Next stop was Vines
Candles to see candles being
made.
Then they were off to
Gerber’s to see how they
embroider names, logos, etc.
on clothing items. A stop at
the chocolate factory
completed the tour of
businesses.
The six ladies then went to
the Listowel Library to
conduct the business portion
of their meeting led by
Margaret McMahon.
On Friday April 27 Grey
Central students Lauren
Stewart and Morgan Deitner
were invited to go the
Stratford Festival Costume
Warehouse for Shakespeare's
443rd birthday.
When they arrived, they
introduced themselves and
what school they were from.
The students were then spilt
into groups and were given a
tour of the warehouse.
They got to try on some
spectacular costumes and
were told many interesting
facts about how the costumes
were made.
Kayla Glynn RD, public
health nutritionist with the
Huron County Health Unit,
came to the school council
meeting on May 16. A small
group of parents listened as
she talked about the newly
revised Canada's Food Guide.
She showed some alarming
trends with regards to health
and well being.
EQAO testing is starting
next week for Grades 3 and 6
students. There are six
sessions, three for reading
and writing and three for
mathematics, to be completed
by June 8.
A gym full of parents,
relatives and friends of
Grades 5 to 8 students
enjoyed the spring concert,
Grey Idol Supersized.
In a variety show format,
the school showcased the
school band, several piano
players, an assortment of
humorous "one-liners", as
well as group and individual
performances by students.
From the reactions of the
audience it was evident that
the evening was a huge
success.
Friday, May 18, was the
May Celebration and
Recognition Assembly. It was
to recognize the character
traits demonstrated by
example by students within
the school.
Highlights of this assembly
included dance routines by
Lexi and Delayna Smith,
Chelsey, Alison and Emily
Terpstra and also a number by
Emily Prior, Morgan
Armstrong, Emily Baker and
Kourtney Pfeiler.
This month Grades 5 and
5/6 were recognized for each
reading 100 books in the
month of April and thereby
bringing about the donation
of 100 books to needy
Canadian children.
Grades 5/6 and 3 were
honoured for having the best
"litterless lunches".
Other special groups
honoured were Grey Idol
participants, GAUSS math
contest participants, Literacy
Link Club members who had
reached the 5,000 page mark
in at home reading and any
students who had completed a
worthy community service.
Grey’s got talent
Grey Central Public School hosted its annual
spring concert last week, which served as more
of a talent showcase. All areas were covered
with soloists, such as Emily Prior, groups and
pianists taking the stage, showcasing what
they could do for their parents and fellow
students. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

Walton WI hits the road
Obviously, the big news
around Walton and area was
the storm that blew through
on Tuesday evening at supper
time.
Plenty of trees were
uprooted or branches torn off,
pieces of barn roofs were
lifted and anything basically
not tied down was blown
away.
The worst hit of our area
was Orville Storey’s place.
The shed was completely
destroyed and many of the
trees around the property
were uprooted and blown
down.
At the Storey home at the
time were Murray and Sherry
McCall in separate vehicles.
Both were damaged by
falling trees – talk about bad
luck!
Down the road a piece a
barn behind the Sloan
residence was destroyed and
some coveralls further down
were blown away.
The Beuermann farm near
Brodhagen was hit badly with
damage to barns, coveralls,
silos and vehicles.Cleanup has been high oneveryone’s list.Holiday Monday was noholiday as I saw Don Baancleaning up a downed tree andRick and I headed to Bayfieldto do the same thing at sisterKarin’s.Congratulations to first-time grandparents Ken and
Brenda Dalton on the birth of
Brandon. Proud parents are
Geoff and Michelle Dalton.
Welcome to the newest
addition to Dalton Farms.
Crop advisor Ken is all
smiles due to being a grandpa
and because the corn is
coming up nicely and very
evenly.
Planting of soybeans is
progressing well but it’s a
little early for white beans.
Home to Walton for a visit
were the two Ryan sisters –
Joan McDonald of Montreal
and sister Teresa Ryan
currently residing in Africa.
They stayed with Nelson
Ryan and had visits with the
other members of the Ryan
family including Gerry and
Anne and Jack and Marianna,
Jim and Betty Ryan and
extended family members.
Sister Teresa is currently
home as well to attend
General Chapter of the
London Sisters of St. Joseph’s
during her three-week visit.
Sister Teresa is practising
basic nursing with HIV andAIDS patients in outreachprogram run by theMissionary Sisters ofPrecious Blood just outsideNairobi, Kenya. She will bethere for a total of five to sixyears and will be able to comehome a couple more times.Where Sister Teresa issituated is about 4,000 feet
above sea level and is cool
most of the time. The clinic is
run by the convent and HIV
and AIDS are at a pandemic
level.
The nearby school is full
and some of the nuns teach
there. Students are very
serious about their education
and work very hard as they
know education is their way
out of poverty.
Walton Ball Park has

earned it”, said Klopp. “It
will take time to get the
legislation through because
Liberals and Conservatives
will not want to give your
money back, so until the day
the rollback takes place, when
elected, I commit to putting
my personal share of this
increase back into the
community where it belongs
by donating it to local
charities.”0
“The Liberals will try to
pretend they have done a
good job and tell us - don’t
worry, be happy. The
Conservatives will just let you
know that they aren’t the
other guys, instead of what
they plan to do. But I will talk
about issues in this
campaign,” said Klopp.
“Issues like the farm income
crisis, health care, education,
the needs of seniors, the
abandonment of small town
and rural Ontario by this
government, and the need for
a positive future for our youth
here at home – this will be the
focus of the NDP campaign.”
As a municipal councillor
Klopp has seen first-hand that
despite government promises
to fix the funding imbalances,
municipalities are now being
forced to increase local taxes
to cover off provincial
downloading.
