The Citizen, 2007-05-17, Page 9THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2007. PAGE 9. River cruise Because of the poor condition this watercourse had been in, canoeing was simply not an option down at this end of Hullett Marsh. The trip’s leader said this was the first trip in about four years. And the people came out for it, despite the cold, damp conditions, canoes were in the water, ready to take the trip. (Shawn Loughlin photo) I offer condolences to the Seeger family of Auburn area on the loss of the dear father of Rhea. Don Hamilton of Goderich passed away in London hospital on Monday, May 7. He leaves behind wife Ilene (Percy Robertson-Day) Hamilton, children Rhea (Klaus) Seeger, Roberta (Randy) Charge, Richard (Jackie) Hamilton, and Randy (Suzanne) Hamilton. He also leaves behind two stepchildren Laurie (Dave) Errington, Paul (Yvonne) Day, 12 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Also grieving is sister Diane Hamilton (Dwight Williams). Don was predeceased by brothers Gerry, Garth, Robert, Jack and on May 5 of this year, brother Gene. The funeral service for Don Hamilton was held on Saturday, May 12 at Knox Presbyterian church in Goderich. In honour of Don’s longtime membership and endless, selfless hours volunteering with Legion 109, many of his comrades paid their respects in a formal and fitting manner with the Colour Party presenting at the onset of the afternoon. Also included in the service, weremoving performances of AmazingGrace and Danny Boy, by violinistTom McLean.Offering touching tributes to theirlife-long friend were Gord Waltersand Bruce Sully. Both men spokefrom the heart of a friend who knew how to fix anything and had a lot of fun along the way. A friend who first and foremost helped anyone in need. I will add this to those words already given: If the measure of a man is how much he is loved in this life, or how much he will be missed when he goes on to the next, Grandpa Don, as he was most often called in our home, would surely have been 10 feet tall. We offer our thoughts and prayers to family and friends during this trying time. Hitting the dirt Mother’s Day wasn’t a big enough holiday to keep the bikers off the trail, and apparently not the mothers either. Riders and their mothers were out in full force last weekend kicking up dirt all day Saturday and all day Sunday. And for the last three weeks there have been many days of full sunshine just ideal weather for golf. *** The ladies had their season opening and luncheon last Tuesday with a great turnout. Thirty hit the links for an enjoyable round of golf with over 40 on hand for the luncheon. The winners of the draw were Debbie Currie and Carol Clark. The ladies’ division has reached an all-time high with over 50 members and new members joining almost daily. Ladies’ golf has really taken off. A few years ago there were only six active members and some left the ranks due to lack of numbers. Such is not the case this year with nearly every day having several ladies out for a round of golf. *** The regular Wednesday Seniors started play last week with 14 on hand on a morning with threatening rain. However the weatherman co- operated and the last ball hit the bottom of the cup on the ninth hole before the rain started. Bob Foxton captured the top prize with Wayne Gordon taking second place and Grant Currie and Lloyd Lamont coming in tied for third. *** Buff’s Thursday night action got underway with full throttle with 24 on hand. It’s a new season with a new name on the leader board as Teeswater’s Perry Hauck took top honours with a 39. Tied for second with 46 were Dave Gamble, Mark Foxton and Rob Gallaher. Neil Bieman won the award for the longest putt on number seven and Rob Gallaher was closest to the pin on number four. Birdies were recorded by Aart DeVos on number six, and Perry Hauck and Murray Coghlin on number nine. On suggestion of Atwood’s Joe O’Rourke the Thursday golfers are setting aside a sum each week which will be donated to the WOAA building fund at year’s end. *** Hats off and a special thank you to the public school students from Wingham Public School who planted 800 small white spruce trees along the entire west edge of the golf course. Many hands make light work! *** University is out and we welcome back to the club staff Lisa Inglis, Brittney Heffer, Nicole Stewart and Mark Hackett. New faces include Michelle Nixon, a newly-graduated teacher who spent three weeks teaching a Grade 7 class in Kenya as part of her training. Michelle was observed trying out her new golf clubs, a graduation gift from grandpa Gerry Edwards.
