It was a very wet and soggy night,
but a little rain didn’t stop the
opening night’s game for the Blyth
U-15 boys soccer team. On May 9
the squad travelled to play Goderich
II.
Blyth started out one player short,
but ended up being able to suit up
one sub for the night.
Blyth was first on the scoreboard
after some real nice teamwork.
Jordon Rinn passed the ball up the
field to Austin Sjaarda, who saw
some Goderich defensive players
blocking his shot on net. He chipped
the ball over to teammate Brent
Drost who scored the first goal of
the night.
Goderich took a shot from the
corner of the field and tied it. Goalie
Matt Steele made a fantastic effort to
stop the ball, but the ball sneaked
over top of his finger into the top
shelf of the net.
Goderich was on fire and headed
the ball into the net two more times.
Blyth didn’t give up and managed
to get another goal before halftime.
With about five minutes left,
Brandon Shaff took the corner kick
for Blyth. Drost picked up the ball
and passed it up to Micah Nonkes
who had a beautiful shot into the
Goderich net.
Eager to stay in the game Blyth
got two more goals in the second
half. Shaff took a penalty kick and
scored . Blyth’s next goal occurred
when Goderich was called for a
hand ball inside the crease. Rinn
took the shot and scored to tie up the
game.
The game ended 4-4.
Jacob VanDorp took up the goalie
position for the second half of the
game. Coach Kelly Murray and
assist coach Mary Ann Drost said
they were very pleased with the
skill, determination and great
teamwork all the players showed for
their opening night.
The Blyth U-15 girls soccer team
started the season May 8 with a
game against St. Columban.
With the rain pouring down St.
Columban got the first opportunity
to score with a penalty shot against
Chantal Warwick. The shot was high
and over the cross bar.
Blyth had difficulty moving the
ball out of their own end and the
offense was repeatedly stopped by
the St. Columban defenders. One
offensive strike by Blyth was turned
around into a St. Colunban
breakaway with three strikers who
outran the Blyth defense and easily
scored.
The Blyth girls pressed hard at the
end of the first half but never got a
clear shot at the net.
It was still raining when the
second half started and St.
Columban put the pressure on the
Blyth defense. Warwick came up
with some more saves but St.
Columban scored on a penalty shot
from outside the goal crease. St.
Columban didn't let up as they
flooded the goal area and scored
with a shot high into the net.
Blyth played hard but couldn't
break free of the St. Columban
defenders to get any shots on net.
St. Columban scored three more
times in the second half.
Blyth were able to test the St.
Columban goalie late in the game
but couldn't break her shutout.
The Brussels U-10s started the
season with a 2-1 win against
Listowel.
Goals were scored by Gregory
Ward with Carl Daw assisting and
by Lexi Smith.
The team consists of Scott
Dolmage, Katie MacFarlane, Dalen
Martin, McKinnly Mitchell, Cody
Rathwell, Madeleine Rouleau, Lexi

The Blyth Lightning U-11 soccer
team started their season May 8
against Lucknow.
The Lightning got off to a good
start, controlling a lot of the play and
keeping the ball out of their own
end.
Wyatt Carey started the scoring
getting pat a couple of defenders and
making sure of the shot into the net.
Tristan Weber scored the second
goal for Blyth as he zig- zagged
through the Lucknow defenders and
shot for the net. Dalton Carey was
not to be out done by his brother and
scored one of his own.
Megan Hoggart played a strong
game and her hard work paid off
with a goal in the second half. Wyatt
Carey added two more goals and
Weber added one to the Blyth total.
Tyler Boven had a good showing
in net taking away several Lucknow
scoring chances. Defenders Marion
Studhalter and Melissa Van Schaik
played a strong defensive game to
keep Lucknow out of the Blyth end.
The Lightning won 7- 0.
Blyth’s U-15s opens season
The Blyth U-13 soccer teams had
their first game of the season on
May 10. There are two Blyth co-ed
soccer teams for youths ages 12 and
13 and the season opener saw them
facing each other.
It was a beautiful May evening for
parents and fans to see Blyth
Lightning (coached by Peter Uyl
and Colin Bokhout) play Blyth
Thunder (coached by Joost
VanDorp). Goalies for the first half
were Connor Prescott for the
Lightning and Wyatt Bearss for the
Thunder.
This was a very evenly matched
half with scoring opportunities for
both teams. The ball was passed and
dribbled down the field and neither
team was able to get the ball across
the goal line.
In the second half Micah Nonkes
covered the net for the Lightning
and Bearss and Lucas Frawley
covered the Thunder’s net.
Once again the teams were
moving the ball back and forth along
the field. The Thunder had a hand
ball and Nadine Otten took the free
kick for her team and scored the first
goal of the night.
The Lightning’s Hunter Broda
maneuvered the ball around his
opponents and kicked the ball
towards the net. Otten picked up the
pass and scored her second goal of
the night.
The game continued to see some
great plays on the field, but not more
goals. The Lightning won 2-0.
Coach Uyl was very impressed
with the his entire team on the
opening night. He mentioned that
his defensive players Jeanette
Schramm, Sarah Steele, Nick
Brandon-Caldwell, Alec Lorentz
and Josh Raynard played strong and
never gave up on their effort to kick
the ball out of their defensive
end.
Nature collides
Thunder and Lightning collided on this day last week. It was
the two Blyth soccer teams squaring off against each other
in U-13 co-ed soccer action. In the end, the Lightning took
the contest by a score of 2-0. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

assist. Elma scored two quick ones
to take back and lead and get the
victory.
Jake Mitchell played well in net.
Other team members are Devin
Bachert, Ronan Jared, Guinevere
Macleod, Jack Pipe, Lorren Poland,
