DR. KEN JACKSON DVM
Blyth’s oldest resident, Dr.
Kenneth George Barrows Jackson
passed away at his residence on
Friday, April 27, 2007 in his 97th
year.
Ken’s rich history was chronicled
in The Citizen, in an article by Rev.
Eugen Bannerman on May 1, 2005.
Dr. Jackson was born in McKillop
Twp. on July 7, 1910, the only child
of George and Margaret. After time
spent in Saskatchewan, the family
eventually returned to reside in a
home built by Dr. Jackson’s father, at
the edge of Walton.
Dr. Jackson attended Grades 1-8 in
Walton and high school in Brussels.
In 1936 he graduated from the
Ontario Veterinary College in
Guelph. He received his Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine degree from the
University of Toronto’s College of
Education.
He practised for a time in Cayuga,
then returned to Blyth to take over
the practice of Dr. Purdue in
1940.
Ken and his wife, the former Ethel
May Davidson, resided on a farm in
Hullett Twp. In 1945 they moved
into Blyth, purchasing a house and
small farm on King Street, where he
resided until his death. The couple attended Blyth UnitedChurch. As a country vet, Dr. Jackson wasoften seen travelling snowbound
roads on foot in winter. Working
independently he was on call 24
hours a day, seven days a week.
Ethel died in 1950 of cancer,
leaving Ken to raise their family of
four, which he did with the help of
live-in caregivers.
He retired in 1964, selling his
business to Dr. Rudy Leibold. From
1981 to 2001 Ken helped his son
Graham maintain the Blyth Union
Cemetery, cutting grass and
preparing burial sites.

his children, Wayne Jackson and his
wife Gloria of Ridgetown, Shirley
Shobbrook and her husband Charles
of RR3, Walton, Graham Jackson of
Blyth and Sharon Jackson of Blyth.
