The Citizen, 2007-05-03, Page 32Welcome back to Jeanne Kirkby
who has returned from a four-day
visit in Barrhaven. Son Paul, with
wife Van, and children Sean and
Melanie have now moved and
settled into their home in Barrhaven,
near Ottawa.
Jeanne travelled by train for her
visit and reports she had a wonderful
time with her grandchildren. She
thinks it’s a lovely community with
very friendly people and nice
neighbours.
It’s always funny to be reminded
of how small a world it is. Two other
local people have family in and
around the Barrhaven area. Marilyn
McDonald’s sister Janie and Merv
and Donna Bauers daughter Kim
and family are there.
Patty and Cassandra Banks were
busy looking after Jeanne’s cat
Charlie. Charlie is a very busy cat
and she received plenty of tender
loving care from the Banks girls. It’s
great to have friends who can step in
and cat-sit for a few days.
Jeanne reunited with an old friend
while in Barrhaven. On Jeanne’s trip
to Vietnam in 2001, her roommate
was a woman who lives near
Barrhaven. They went out for dinner
together and caught up with each
other’s lives. She had the chance to
meet Jeanne’s family.
Home for just over a week were
Sherry (Hoegy) Delay and Joy
Dawson. Sherry was home to spent
time with Barry and help out with
various things. She returned to her
husband Eric and home in North
Carolina this week.
Members of the Gillis family
gathered together to celebrate
Mildred Gillis’s 80th birthday. They
dined at the Fireside Cafe and had
an enjoyable time together.
Having a great visit with her
brother and sister-in-law were Pearl
McCallum and Harold. Lloyd and
Shirley Regele dropped in and spent
the day and had dinner with Pearl
and Harold on Friday.
They are from Princeton, near
Woodstock.
Our condolences to Clint and Judy
Emmrich and family on the passing
of Clint’s mother Veronica Emmrich
in Kitchener.
Our best wishes for a speedy
recovery to Jamie Emmrich who
suffered a broken collarbone at
motocross in Auburn.
The 4-H Chinchilla Club held its
annual show and sale at the Walton
Hall on Saturday. They had a great
day and successful sale.
The Walton Brewers fastball team
held practice and a barbecue on
Saturday as well. The boys gathered
to have a farewell party for Mike
Nolan who is leaving the team and
moving to Guelph.
The wives, girlfriends and
families also joined in the festivities
at Walton Hall.

Fourteen young people from our
area spent the weekend of April 14
and 15 helping the less fortunate in
Africa by participating in a 30-hour
famine. Monies were raised by the
teens from sponsors for the event.
Vanessa Wilts, one of those
teenagers, filed this report on their
weekend.
“On Saturday, April 14, 14 people
began the 30-hour famine at
Londesborough United Church to
raise money for the kids in Africa
who do not have much to eat.
We did many different events
during the day to keep our minds off
food. One game had everyone telling
the group what their favourite food
is. Later in the day we walked about
the village picking up garbage that
had accumulated over the winter.
After similarly cleaning up the
Hullett School yard we played in the
gym.
We returned to the church to talk
about the church service on Sunday
and what we were all doing to
participate in the service. When that
was organized we talked about what
the children in Africa are going
through. All of us don’t think much
about how much water we use on a
daily basis. We learned that African
children have very little water each
day for drinking, bathing, cooking,
gardening and flushing.
For supper on Saturday we got one
cup of rice each and nothing more.
By Sunday morning we were all
pretty hungry. After helping with the
worship service, we finally got to eat
pizza.
It was a great experience doing the
famine and learning about the hard
times for African families. We would
really like to thank Crystal Whyte
and her brothers for making it an
interesting weekend for us.

passed away recently and this year’s
concert was dedicated to their
memory.
John Jewitt on the bagpipes and
Barb Bosman at the organ
concluded the evening with
Amazing Grace, a duet which held
special significance to the
Penfounds.
Coming down
Mennonites converged in Walton Tuesday morning and made short work of
tearing down the “old and tired” front of Dauphin’s Feed Mill in Walton. Mike
Dauphin said their other facility in Dungannon is more efficient and has more
capacity, so they will no longer be producing feed in Walton. However this
does not mean that the hamlet is losing a business. Dauphin stresses that
they will continue to sell out of their warehouse now and look for a new store
to go up in the front by July 1. The mill was built in 1916 onto a cement
foundation, which Dauphin says will remain. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
