Morris-Turnberry councillors
agreed at their March 20 meeting to
participate in a meeting to look at the
future of Walton Hall.
The decision came following a
discussion with a delegation from
Huron East the previous night which
asked if Morris-Turnberry would
like to be notified of any meeting
regarding the hall.
Jack McLachlan, clerk-adminis-
trator for Huron East said the Walton
Women’s Institute had asked about
the possibility of transferring owner-
ship to the municipality because of
declining membership.
Speaking at the March 20 meeting,
councillor Mark Beaven said that
based on his experience on the
Moncrieff Hall board, he’d be
against the municipality taking over
the hall and running it. Moncrieff
Hall continued to be viable because
the community took ownership and
was involved in things like fund-
raising to support the building. “It
wasn’t a drain on taxpayer funds,” he
said.

Councillors voted to hold off on a
decision to support the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex until
their April 3 meeting.
“It’s a major issue in our town-
ship,” said deputy-mayor Jim
Nelemans.
The proposal would see Morris-
Turnberry provide $40,000 in
support for $2007; $50,000
for 2008; and $60,000 per year
in 2009 and 2010.

Andrew Ross from BM Ross and
Associates was appointed engineer
to prepare plans, tender and super-
vise bridge work and culvert
replacement for 2007.
“Some of our projects are ‘in
water’ projects and we have to give
the Department of Fisheries and
Oceans notice,” said Barry
O’Kraftka, public works co-ordina-
tor, in explaining the need for an
early start to planning.
The same engineer and company
were appointed to prepare the bi-
annual bridge inspection report.
O’Kraftka explained that by using
the same engineer who did the work
two years ago money would be
saved compared with having some-
one start from scratch.

Joe Kerr Limited was awarded
tenders to supply and crush gravel
for the municipality’s needs in 2007.
Four projects were involved, rang-
ing from crushing and stockpiling in
the Woolcock pit in Turnberry ward
to supplying, crushing, hauling and
applying in the southern part of
Morris Ward. O’Kraftka said that
with the municipality’s budget being
$292,000, it would leave about
$20,000 for applying gravel for
some projects. “It should work out
pretty close to what we put in the
budget,” he said.
***
O’Kraftka and Paul Connelly were
authorized to attend the road school
in Guelph.

The municipality will seek to hire
two summer students under the 2007
Rural Summer Jobs Service
Program. The preference will be to
try to hire college students as last
year. “They were terrific”, said
mayor Dorothy Kelly of last year’s
students.
***
Deputy-mayor Jim Nelemans
asked if some work could be done,
perhaps by the summer students to
make the entrance to the Morris
landfill site look more attractive.

A grant of $500 was given to the
Blyth Festival.
