The Citizen, 2007-03-15, Page 8Seaforth Stars travelled to
Ennismore on Friday, March 9 for
the third game of the series tied at a
game apiece.
The Stars grabbed the lead with
2:49 left to go in the second period.
Darcey Cook snuck one by the
Ennismore goaltender on a pass
from Dave McClory.
The Stars came out a determined
crew in the final period but
Ennismore registered the tying goal
then took the lead shortly afterwards
with another powerplay marker
making it 2-1. Ennismore would add
the insurance goal before period end
to take the game 3-1.
Spectacular netminding by Josh
Nurse was the only thing that even
gave the Stars a chance of coming
back in this contest.
Play resumed the following day
with the Stars facing their opponents
with a somewhat depleted squad.
Ennismore would hit the board first
taking an early 1-0 lead.
The Stars would hold their own
until with minutes remaining in the
second period Ennismore added
another to increase their lead to 2-0.
The Stars would keep battling in
the third thanks in a large part to
Nurse practically standing on his
head to keep the Ennismore squad
from scoring. With 6:32 remaining
in the third Matt Fisher sent a tape-
to-tape pass to Cook coming out of
the penalty box. Cook broke in alone
beating the Ennismore backstopped
with a wrist-shot over his glove
narrowing the margin to 2-1.
Inspired by this the Stars struck
again at 3:39 with Cook snapping his
second of the night past the keeper
on a nice setup by McClory.
Overtime would solve nothing but
forced the game back to Seaforth on
Sunday afternoon.
Playing in front of a very
enthusiastic group of fans the Stars
hit the scoreboard first. At the 12:36
mark of the first period Cook took a
feed from McClory and wristed it by
the Ennismore keeper for a 1-0 lead.
Ennismore struck back however
with a powerplay goal of their own
with only 2:16 remaining in the first.
A see-saw battle would ensue with
both teams having great chances in
the second period but the game
would remain tied 1-1 going into the
third.
Ennismore jumped into the lead
on a two-on-one at the 11:02 mark.
The stars mounted an incredible
amount of pressure particularly at
the end with Nurse pulled, but could
not score. This resulted in the series
win for the Ennismore squad.
The crowd gave the Stars a
standing ovation for their effort in
this series.
Much credit for this Stars team
goes to Lisa Campbell for her
determination in having the Juvenile
team come together in Seaforth.
Campbell spent countless hours on
phone or e-mails to players, coaches
and league personnel to have this
happen.
