The Citizen International Women’s Day March 8 will be celebrated this year in Huron County with the fifth Annual Women of Distinction awards, honouring women for their contributions to their communities. In celebration of this annual event, Women Today of Huron is asking the public to nominate a special woman and to highlight the particular contributions she has made to her community in Huron County. “Nominees can include a volunteer, a caregiver, coach, a teacher, a community leader, or a woman who may have contributed in some other special way,” said Pam Hanington, Women Today of Huron Executive Director. “These awards are a way to recognize women for their many accomplishments and let them know they have not gone unnoticed.” Submissions must include the name of the nominee, their phone number and the name and phone number of the person nominating them and also include a short one- paragraph description about why you are nominating this woman. Nominations will be accepted until Friday, March 2 until 4:30 p.m. and can be submitted by phone 519- 524-6767; fax 519-524-1233; e- mail: info@wthuron.ca or can be dropped off in person or mailed to Women Today of Huron 45 West Street Goderich, N7A 2K5. Last year’s nominees included Winnie Brown, Jennifer Finegan, Marylo Graham, June Robinson, Dayle Taylor, Linda Wiebe, Jean Young and future woman of distinction, Ella Baker-Lehnen. 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of International Women’s Day, which was established in 1977 by the United Nations. The purpose of the day is to provide an opportunity to reflect on the progress made to advance women’s equality, to assess the challenges facing women in contemporary society, to consider future steps to enhance the status of women and, of course, to celebrate the gains made in these areas. The Canadian theme for International Women’s Week 2007 is Ending Violence Against Women: Action for Real Results, which reflects Canada’s approach to addressing gender- based violence.
