The Brussels Tykes faced off
against Blyth II on Saturday
morning.
Brussels was quick to score in the
first few minutes of play. Knocking
it in was Connor Bridge, assisted by
Logan Kellington and Avery
McArter.
Play continued back and forth
when Kailey Wheeler scored
unassisted at the end of the first
period to take a 2-0 lead. Wyatt
Machan scored in the middle of the
second period to make it 3-0.
Blyth II was able to score their
lone goal shortly after to make it 3-
1.
Delayna Smith, with the help of
Jamie Perrault, squeaked one past
the Blyth goalie to make it 4-1
heading in to the third. With only
two minutes left in play, Noah
Terpstra, assisted by Kellington and
Konrad McArter, shot one between
the posts to make it a 5-1 victory for
Brussels.
Goalie for Brussels was Derrick
Waechter, making 15 saves
throughout the game.
Blyth Atom Reps take WOAA series in 3 straight
On Wednesday, Feb. 14 the
Saugeen Maitland Midget AA girls
hockey team travelled to Stratford’s
new arena to take on Stratford’s
female Midget AA squad for game
one of their provincial playdown
series.
Both teams hit the ice hard, setting
the tone for the rest of the series.
Scoring chances were few and far
between for much of the game, as
both teams played well defensively.
Things began to get heated as the
game progressed, on ice the game
took a turn for the rougher and even
the fans began to get caught up in the
tension. Despite a particularly
intense attack in the final minute,
Maitland was unable to find the net
and the game ended as it had started,
0-0.
Game two of the series was played
in Howick on Sunday evening. After
tying Stratford in the previous game
the girls were hungry for a win, and
started off the game strong. This
game, much like the first, provided
few scoring chances for either team.
It was not until the second period
when Maitland had a bit of a
defensive lapse that the Stratford
captain was able to breakaway and
beat Syd Brown of Kincardine
cleanly to put Stratford ahead
1-0.
The girls did not get discouraged
though, and continued to battle hard
for the rest of the game. Minutes into
the third their hard work paid off,
when Karisa Ross of Palmerston
found Kate Wagner of Sauble Beach,
who in turn fired a pass onto the
stick of Kathryn Roy of Owen
Sound. Roy launched a missile of a
shot past a sprawling Stratford
defenceman and into the lower
portion of the net on the goaltender’s
blocker side.
Encouraged by this, the girls
picked it up a notch and began to
generate more offence throughout
the period. Unfortunately they were
unable to solve the goaltender for a
second time, and the game ended in
a 1-1 draw.
The team was penalty free for this
game. Stephanie Heffer of Belmore
has gone a week without taking a
trip to the sin bin.
Game three of the series will take
place on Wednesday, Feb. 21 in
Stratford.

The Huron Perth Lakers AAA
Major Midget hockey team’s first
round of playoffs against the
Windsor Jr. Spitfires is well
underway, and the Lakers find their
backs against the wall.
Saturday, Feb. 24 in Brussels at
4:30 p.m., they will play game five
in a must-win situation. The team
finds itself down five points to three
in the six point series after four hard
fought games. If the Lakers are able
to win on Saturday, they will force
game six in Windsor on Sunday.
In game one in Brussels, the two
teams were tied after 60 minutes. A
five-minute overtime solved nothing
and each team picked up a point.
In game two in Goderich, the
Lakers came out flat in the first,
finding themselves behind 3-0 just
11 minutes into the game and losing
5-2.
This past weekend they traveled to
Windsor to play games three and
four on Saturday and Sunday. The
team needed at least one win to
make sure that the series went back
home for the following weekend.
Saturday night the team found
themselves behind 4-2 going into
the third period, but the line of Chris
Holmes, Kurtis Bartliff, and Tyler
Masson exploded for three third-
period goals to win the game and
force game five.
Bartliff had three goals and two
assists on the night. Holmes had
four assists and Masson added two
goals and one assist.
On Sunday the Lakers played hard
but again found themselves down 4-
0 five minutes into the second
period. They were able to score two
goals but were unable to make the
come back.
Masson scored once. Bartliff
picked up two assists, with Holmes
having one. Jacob Brown also
assisted on one of the goals and
Andrew Van Vliet scored the second
goal of the game.
