Monday’s daytime curling morning action at the Wingham club saw three one-sided games and one game that went into an extra end. Nelson Frank was a 16-2 winner over Stewart Leedham and John Mann had a 12-3 victory over Les Shaw. With skip Bill Deans a late scratch due to an “upper body injury” his spot was well filled by top-notch curler Don McKay and they had a rather big win over Norm Fairles. In a real thriller Jim Coultes came up with just a great double take-out with his final rock in the eighth end to send the game into an extra end. With the last rock Ivan Dow came up short and Coultes was the 7-6 winners. In afternoon action results were: Mac Inglis 10, Wendell Stamper 8; Ross Peacock 12, Bruce Robertson 6 and Irving Elliott 9, Ron McMichael 4. Congratulations to the Ross Peacock rink on winning the second draw with only one loss. Members of the winning rink were skip Ross Peacock, vice Jean Nethery, second Barry Simpson and lead Lloyd Wheeler. *** In Monday men’s action John Nixon was a 7-3 winner over Barry Simpson and Les Shaw doubled up on Bruce Robertson with an 8-4 win. *** In Tuesday ladies action Marg Moffat was the winner over Sandra Morrison. Jill Eadie edged Keisha Bishop 8-6. The other two games were very one-sided as Kayla Bishop downed Jennie Hogervorst 11-2 and Ainslie Weishar white-washed Cathy Donnelly 13-0. Winner of this draw was Kayla Bishop with 93.5 points. *** In the Tuesday competitive league there were lots of ones on the losing side as Aart DeVos was a 12-1 winner over Rob Middleton, Calvin Ruttan an 8-1 winner over Earl Fitch and Russ Taylor downed Shawn Cottrill 13-1. In the other game Don Edgar was up 9-2 after four ends but Bill DeVos tied the game nine all and stole one in the extra end to wind 10- 9. *** Tuesday and Wednesday saw the cream of the curling crop in action in the Huron High School Championship. In the girls division our own top-notch team won the championship going undefeated. Members of the team were eagle- eyed skip Leanne Elston, vice Brittany Horton, second Kayla Bishop and lead Julie Phillips. In the boys division the crown went to the McGregor foursome from Exeter’s South Huron. The winning teams advance to the Huron/Perth bonspiel played Feb. 21 at the Wingham club. *** In Wednesday mixed action it was Aart DeVos 7, Steve Burke 4; Tammy Adams 6, John Dailleboust 5 and Dean Newson 9, Wayne Horton 4. And the battle between the big and the small saw petite Leanne Elston a real giant killer downing Earl Fitch 11-3. In Thursday mixed action, in the last week of the draw Bill McDonald recorded a 7-4 win over Kevin Bishop. Kayla Bishop continued her winning ways with an 8-4 victory over Elliott. Miller and dad Doug Miller also was on the losing end of a 10-3 game with Cam Alton. The winner of the draw was the Kayla Bishop rink with 106 points. Other members of Kayla’s team, Kyle Forster, Jill Eadie and Matthew Cottrill. *** A couple of interesting bonspiels will take place. On Wednesday, Feb. 28 the WOSSA high school bonspiel with winning teams from all WOSSA areas on hand to vie for the championships. On March 3 it’s the ever-popular Belgrave mixed bonspiel featuring skilled and several once-a-year curlers with good curling and a guaranteed good time. *** West to Saskatoon. Yes six rinks from the Belmore-Wingham area left by air on Thursday to play in the 39th annual Canadian Livestock Curling Bonspiel at Saskatoon. Skips for the local rinks are Jim Ross, Niel Edgar, Aart DeVos, Mac Inglis and Philip Eadie. *** Nice to see Alex Nethery back on the curling ice following his heart bi- pass surgery – certainly a quick return to curling action. *** Have curling broom will travel. Four of our lady curlers took part in the Belmore ladies’ bonspiel and won the 9 a.m. draw. The team was skipped by Ruth Olson with Linda Meier vice, Marg moffat second and Yvonne Coultes, lead. *** The Libro ladies bonspiel held last Saturday was a howling success. Winner of the first draw and overall bonspiel winner was a rink skipped by Krista Ritchie of Ripley and included local ladies Carolyn Greenaway and Janis Bray. That great foursome of young curlers from the high school continued their winning ways with top honours in the second draw. Members of the rink were Ainslie Weishar, Jill Eadie, Kayla Bishop and Keisha Carter. The curlers were asked to come dressed as their favourite farmer or farm animal and lots of laughs were provided. Winner of costume prize in the first draw was Brussels Brenton Linton’s rink featuring Jo-Ann McDonald as the farmer with the herd, two cows and a bull. Keen observation left no doubt which lady represented the bull. In the second draw, the costume door prize was won by Cindy DeVos and three unnamed members of Libro staff dressed as hillbillies Harriet, Effie, Martha and Bobbi- Joe.
