The Citizen, 2007-02-22, Page 7The Walton Hall and its owners,
the Walton Women’s Institute have
heard good news back from Huron
East. They are willing to assume
ownership of the hall and will begin
negotiations with the ladies of the
Institute.
The hall was the meeting place for
the Huron Perth Cattle Feeders Co-
operative Ltd. annual meeting on
Tuesday afternoon. They first
enjoyed a soup and sandwichluncheon provided by the WaltonHall board.Returning home from a two-weekvacation in Punta Canta, DominicanRepublic are Harold and PearlMcCallum along with Wayne andJoyce Hartman. They had a greattime. The weather was good and the
resort very nice.
Harold was “truly surprised” when
Ron and Betty McCallum arrived at
the resort the very next day. Harold
celebrated his birthday while away.
He said it’s always nice to come
home.
Speaking of the McCallums, don’t
forget the benefit dance this
weekend for Carl and Tab McCallum
and boys who lost their home to fire
a few weeks ago.
The event is being held at the
Seaforth Agriplex and tickets are
available at McGavins.

our hand at golf.

“Likely the WI won’t have much
of a role in it other than if some of
their membership would like to
serve on a committee that oversees
the operations,” he said.
“The hall will likely run very
similar to the other three halls we
have in Grey. They’re owned by the
municipality, but there’s a local
committee that runs them for us. We
don’t really get involved in a lot of
the day-to-day activities.”
The WI’s letter says that the hall
has been well-kept, maintained by
the hall board. The WI has owned
the hall for 31 years and have
operated it personally for 21 years.
“This actually works out well for
all parties, because then they’ll be
covered for insurance purposes
through the municipality, which is
really the road I think they should be
going on,” Knight said.
In addition to breaks on operating
the hall and insurance, Knight adds
that the cost of the hall will become
more manageable for the hall board
if they need to do improvements
once the municipality steps in.
“What we’ve done with the Grey
halls that’s worked out really well is
if they’re looking to do some sort of
improvement to the building, first,
there’s a grant available to them. But
then what we’ve done is cover half
of the costs and the committee,
through fundraising will raise the
other half, and that’s worked out
well,” Knight said.
“They’ve done some
improvements as far as the building
goes, so technically the building
should be in pretty good shape right
now.”
Knight says that the letter from the
WI and council agreeing to start
negotiations is really just the first
step. He adds that these talks will
most likely take place in the next
two to three months, once the budget
deliberations have taken place.
A spokesperson from the Walton
WI declined comment for this
story.

Knight says ownership change works well for all
In an attempt to eliminate the
“mystery” over how the Avon
Maitland District School Board’s
top administrator is paid, trustees
have brought a level of order to
deliberations about their director of
education’s salary.
Pay for the position, currently
held by Geoff Williams, will now be
determined based on a three-level
“grid.” The grid takes into account
such things as years of experience,
with the director of education
coming into the job at the base
rate, then advancing through two
other grid positions depending on
service.
“The director’s salary was
previously the only salary of all
employee groups that was not tied to
a grid,” explained a report from the
board’s communications
department.
According to an official at the
board, the change arose partly out of
the trustees’ concerns about
“succession planning.”
They wanted to know that the
board is paying a salary that’s fair
for that level of position, and they
also wanted to have a level of
confidence that, when somebody is
in that position, that they aren’t out
looking for another job that might
pay better.
