The Blyth Rollers were just one of
15 PeeWee teams to participate in
the Provincial Junior Broomball
Tournament held Feb. 9-11 near
Barrie. The Rollers played three
exciting games of broomball during
this weekend tournament.
The Rollers’ first opponents were
the Windsor Devils on Friday
afternoon. This was a fairly evenly-
played match. Windsor got a lucky
break during the first period when
Blyth’s defence left a man open in
front of their net. Windsor pounded
the balls to Rollers goalie Murray
Dale, who did a fantastic job
covering the net for Blyth. The
Devils were ahead 1-0 at half-time.
In the second period Windsor
flipped the ball over Dale’s shoulder
to widen their lead.
The Rollers kept digging for the
ball and had some great shots on
Windsor, but couldn’t get the ball
over the goal line. The game ended
in a 2-0 win for the Windsor Devils.
The Rollers were up early on
Saturday to meet with another
Central West team, the Mildmay
Green Hawks. The 6:45 a.m. game
saw the Rollers wide awake and
ready to play as they scored during
the first shift. Curtis Terpstra made a
nice pass to Tyler Guetter who shot
the ball at the Mildmay net and took
a bounce off the Hawks defensive
player.
Mildmay tied up the game
halfway through the first period.
Blyth received a slashing penalty,
but played a strong defensive
penalty killer and didn’t allow the
Hawks to score. The score was a 1-1
tie at half-time.
The Rollers came out strong after
their half-time pep talk. Marlayna
Kolkman scored after chipping the
ball into the net. She had some help
getting the ball to the net from her
teammate Guetter and C. Terpstra.
Defensive player Hunter Broda dug
for the ball and took a hard shot into
Mildmay’s net. Kolkman was in the
right spot once again and flipped the
ball into the net for her second goal
of the game. The rollers won 3-1.
Murray Dale made some great
saves and did a great job covering
the net.
The Rollers had a difficult game
against the Windsor Riots on
Saturday afternoon. The Windsor
Riots were an elite team that scored
twice in the first shift of the game.
The Rollers had some unusual bad
luck and had three players in the
penalty box at the same time. Dale
was pounded by the ball and made
numerous saves for his team.
The Rollers never gave up and
kept digging for the ball right until
the time clock signalled the game
was over. The Rollers were showing
some great ball control and taking
shots on net in the last minute of the
game.
The Rollers lost this game 7-0.
The Rollers had a great year of
broomball and should be proud of
their entire team efforts at this
provincial tournament, said coaches
Dutchie (Rob) Kolkman and Cheryl
Souch and assistant coach Mary Ann
Drost are very pleased with the
Rollers performance. All members
of the team showed off some of the
great skills they learned over the
year during the tournament, they
said.
The players were Hunter Broda,
Jordon deBoer, Jasmine Ducharme,
Shelby Hakkers, Tyler O’Rourke,
Jordon Reinink, Matt Terpstra,
Murray Dale, Wyatt Bearss, Derek
deBoer, Zach Drost, Tyler Guetter,
Tori Kellington, Marlayna Kolkman,
Laura Souch, Lanie Smith and
Curtis Terpstra.
The Novice Brussels Bulls had a
very busy weekend, playing four
games in less than 48 hours.
On Friday night, the Bulls played
their final game of the regular
season facing off against the Blyth
Bulldogs.
Despite going down to defeat, the
Brussels squad played a very strong
game, highlighted by the energetic
play of Dawson Peachey, Ashley
Stevenson and Tiffany “Stonewall”
Deitner.
Early the next morning, the Bulls
came out with all guns firing as they
took on the Goderich Sailors at the
Blyth Lions Novice tournament.
Brussels played a tight-checking
game, surrendering only one goal to
Goderich in the first minute of
play.
Tensions mounted in the second
when Sean Mitchell drew a hooking
penalty. But the Brussels penalty-
killers were in top form,
extinguishing the Goderich power-
play in short order.
With a minute left in the game,
Brussels pulled their goal-tender to
take the man advantage. Despite
blistering shots from Wyatt Machan,
Logan Kellington and Emma
Strome, Brussels was unable to put
the puck in the net. The final score
was 1-0 for Goderich.
Brussels was back in Blyth again
on Sunday to take on the Milverton
Drives in their first game of the
playoffs. Kieran Jared scored on a
breakaway. But by the fourth match
of the weekend, fatigue finally set in
for the Brussels team. Milverton
scored four times in the remaining
minutes of the game to take a one-
to-nothing series lead.
Rollers season ends
The Brussels Atom Reps finished
their playoff round against Elma
Logan victoriously.
It was a great series between these
well-matched competitors that could
have gone either way.
The first game was knotted at 4-4
by the buzzer so moved into
overtime. Elma Logan scored first to
win the game.
Brody TenPas led Brussels’
scoring with a hattrick, while
Mitchell Kellington scored one.
Assists went to Jordyn Sholdice,
Anthony Vader and Tanner Cardiff.
The second game was played
away but home ice advantage didn’t
help Elma Logan. Brussels came out
strong and won 3-0.
TenPas had two goals while Lexi
Smith netted one. Assists were
creditted to Tim Waechter, Colton
Hastings and Reece McArter.
Matt McNichol was flawless
between the pipes to earn the
shutout.
The third game wasn’t as easy as
the squads battled to a nail-biting 2-
1 ending. TenPas scored the lone
Brussels goal, with Elma Logan
getting the victory.
It was a tricky drive to Elma
Logan for game four, but a full
Brussels squad made it. The pressure
was on for a win and Brussels didn’t
let their fans down. They squeaked
out a 2-1 victory with TenPas and
Brock McLean scoring. Smith and
McArter were creditted with assists.
The final match went Brussels
way as well with the squad winning
3-1 to take the series.
McLean scored, assisted by Smith
and Hayden TenPas to get the team
fired up. Hastings and Smith worked
together to set up the play for
McLean’s second goal.
With Elma Logan frustrated in
their attempts to get the shots past
McNichol, who only allowed one
goal, McLean skated in to score his
hattrick.
Maybe next time
The Brussels Novice hockey team came up short at last weekend’s Blyth Lions hockey
tournament. Brussels took on Wallace only to lose by a score of 10-0. Wallace scored early
and often to bury the local team. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

younger players only got one past
him.
On Saturday, Brussels hosted
Seaforth. Brussels skated away with
a 4-3 win.
Goals were scored by Logan
Kellington and Wyatt Machan.
Assists went to Kailey Wheeler,
Avery McArter, Connor Bridge and
Ronan Jared.
Dylan McNeil and Bennett
Newell played extremely well in
their defence positions.
Brussels hosts both Blyth teams
over the next two Saturdays.

If you see one of our top youth
curlers sporting a nice new coat
indicating she had been to the
Ontario Provincial Bantam
Championships it will be Kayla
Bishop.
Kayla was a member of the
Bantam girls team from Exeter
which represented this district in
the Ontario Provincial
Championships held in Oshawa.
Kayla reports it was a great
experience. They played seven
games, all close games and she was
