Stormy weather cancelled the
Cadet Corps meeting both Monday
and Tuesday evenings at the
Brussels Legion.
There were only a few Brussels
pipe band members who braved the
weather on Thursday.
The dart league had 14 players
show up despite the weather. The
first-place team was Gord Jacklin
and Sandra Josling. In second place
were John Stadelmann and Marlene
Little. The high shots of the night
were by Sharon Robbins shooting
105 and John Stadelmann shooting
21.
The Friday night supper was a
surprise to the diners due to a
shortage of time on my part. Instead
of ham and scalloped potatoes, they
enjoyed sweet and sour meatballs
and mashed potatoes. This week will
be ham and scalloped potatoes (I
hope).
The Saturday euchre was
cancelled due to the weather but the
Sunday night dance was held with a
slightly smaller crowd than usual,
again probably weather related.
The Branch is still collecting
poptabs.
For any college or university
students of Legion members, bursary
forms are available at the Branch.
Some of the criteria include that
students must be in their second
semester and will not be able to have
the bursary application stamped and
confirmed by the school.
Applications must be submitted to
the bursary committee by March 15,
so interested students need to act
soon.
Applications can be picked up at
the Branch.
PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2007.Snow remains the hot topic for
discussion. The amount, the drifts,
the banks and the whiteouts have all
been well observed and discussed
this past week. The ever-changing
sights, or not, are what makes the
winter season so special. Even the
buildings have their own decorationsas the fluffy stuff caught on the roofsand made many graceful patterns. So celebrate the changes that wesee and be grateful you’re in thehouse when you can’t see.The school gang is all well restedand ready to take on a full week ofclasses. It certainly was a nice breakin routine for nearly everyone. We had our annual trip to Hallvilleto check in on Brother Jim, Beth and
their crew. Celebrating winter is a
big part of the Ottawa area with
outdoor rinks being well used and
the Rideau Canal the longest skating
rink to be had. We had a beautiful
cold, crisp morning skate on the
smoothest ice we’ve had for several
years. It was so cold that my eyelashdecided it would try being an icicle. Now it shouldn’t take you long tofigure you need two good eyes toskate outdoors. Yes it was humblingto remove the icicle from a proneposition and then make a gallantattempt to get up gracefully. Now four days later I’m stillwincing when I sit down. There are several carnivals that
celebrate our winter season in this
part of Ontario but the Winterlude in
Ottawa and Hull is the granddaddy
with outdoor entertainment, snow
sculptures and ice carvings, snow
slides, skating, cutter rides and
beavertails. The aim is the adults and
the kid who already love winter arewell looked after as well. It doesn’ttake long to forget the cold.In case beavertail is not part ofyour snack group, you really musttry one. Only after a good skate canyou truly enjoy this deep fried pieceof dough sprinkled with brownsugar and cinnamon. Once a year ismore that enough and only atWinterlude. The cancellations of last week are
getting caught up and February is
now in the last half.
Have a good week and hopefully it
includes flowers and candy from
your Valentines.
Read a good book this week.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Brussels 135th Homecoming
celebration may be months away, but
there’s at least one event people
might want to start working on now.
On the Saturday morning, July 28,
organizers are holding a soap box
derby for children between the ages
of four and 10.
Mark Gropp had assisted with the
soap box derbys sponsored by The
Citizen at FunFest more than a
decade ago and brought the idea
forward at a recent meeting of the
Homecoming committee.
“We wanted more things for the
kids to be involved with,” said
committee chair Gary Pipe, “and
Mark mentioned the derby.
Gropp recalls the races were a big
hit with the kids who participated
and he and Pipe agreed it was nice in
this day of video games, etc. to see a
return to some old-fashioned fun.
While there will be two cars
available that day for young racers,
participants are also encouraged to
build their own soap box car. An
instruction sheet will be available at
The Citizen or create your own. “Use
your imagination,” said Gropp.
“All’s that’s required are four
wheels, steering and brakes.”
The cars must be for gravity racing
only. Participants will be required to
wear a bicycle helmet.
Registration will be at 8:45 a.m.
on Saturday and there is no fee for
entering. Parents will be required to
complete a consent form.
“We aren’t awarding prizes,” said
Pipe. “This is not going to be about
competition, but just for the kids to
have fun.”
Anybody with questions can
contact Pipe at 519-887-6291 or
Gropp at 519-887-6353.

Natalie White, 13, of Brussels won her division of the
District free throw competition held at St. Anne’s
Secondary School in Clinton recently. White will now go on
to compete in London next month. She received a medal
