The Citizen, 2007-02-01, Page 8January has been a pretty good
month for the Blyth Atom Local
League team who have had only one
loss recently to blemish their stellar
results to start 2007.
Most recently on Jan. 27, Blyth
made the trek to Lucknow only to
come out on top by a score of 6-2.
Blyth’s goals were evenly
distributed, scoring two in the first,
two in the second and two in the third.
Dylan Bromley led the way for
Blyth with a hattrick and an assist.
Kyle Pollard chipped in with two
goals of his own and Dalton
Richmond contributed one goal to
Blyth’s effort.
Brendan Hallahan and Jimmy Lane
both had an assist to round out the
scoring for Blyth in the Lucknow
contest, while Dalton Carey held his
own in Blyth’s net for the win.
Bromley came up big for Blyth in
their Jan. 25 contest with Seaforth,
scoring a late goal against Seaforth,
but that was all that Blyth would score
on this day.
Seaforth won the match 3-1.
Blyth’s only goal against Seaforth
was assisted by Curtis Raynard and
Josh Van Soest.
Blyth lit the lamp three times in a
win over Brussels 3-1 on Jan. 24.
With Dustin Treble in net, Blyth
coasted to a win, scoring the go-ahead
goal in the first period, only to add
insurance in the third.
Van Soest scored the first and third
goals for Blyth and Dalton Richmond
scored the winning goal for Blyth in
the first period.
Kyle Pollard, Bromley and Curtis
Raynard all had assists to help Blyth
win the contest.
Lexi Smith scored the only
Brussels goal, unassisted in the first,
but it wasn’t enough to come back for
the win.
Their win against Brussels came
hot on the heels of a win against
Elma-Logan in Monkton just three
days prior on Jan. 21 by a score of 4-
2.
Goals were scored by Pollard and
Raynard as well as Jimmy Lane and
Richmond who had a goal as well as
an assist. Bromley also chipped in
with one assist.
Treble was at the helm in this
contest as well, leading his teammates
to victory.
Blyth’s win came just three days
after a tough contest against a worthy
opponent, Mitchell, which ended in a
2-2 draw.
Carey held Mitchell’s attack in
Blyth’s net, while Van Soest scored
both of Blyth’s goals with helpers
from Lane, Raynard and Connor
Rodger.
A week before they traveled to
Mitchell Blyth shutout BCH with a
score of 5-0.
Bromley led the way for Blyth with
a hattrick and one assist, while Lane
and Richmond both had a goal and an
assist in the contest. Assists were
added by Raynard, Ryan Plunkett and
Dallas Coultes.
Carey was in net for Blyth, racking
up the shutout.
SportsPAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2007.On Sunday the Saugeen Maitland
Midget AAs stepped onto the ice for
their last regular season game.
This game was expected to be
fairly intense as emotions were still
running high from the last time
Saugeen Maitland and Stratford
met.
Both teams came out hard,
determined to take control of the
game, but neither team was able to
get much going in the first period,
and the game remained scoreless
until partway through the second.
Stratford would be the first to hit
the marker, putting a tough one past
the Maitland net minder and taking a
1-0 lead.
Although the girls created some
good scoring chances and enjoyed
several powerplays, they were
unable to solve Stratford’s defence,
and had to head to the dressing room
for the intermission still trailing by
one. After a very positive team
discussion the girls were pumped
and ready to go for the third.
It was completely neck and neck
throughout the period, with
Maitland getting closer and closer to
tying it up.
In the final minutes of the game,
the coaches decided it was time to
put on the extra attacker. With six of
the girls out there they were able to
control the play down in the
Stratford zone, creating a whole
world of pressure for Stratford’s
defensive core to deal with.
After a number of near misses,
Kelsey VanderVeen of Lucknow let
a zinger go from the point with
Tammy Freiburger of Wingham
getting a stick on it to redirect it
past the unprepared Stratford
goaltender.
This tied the game at 1-1 with
under a minute to go. Maitland was
then able to shut down the Stratford
offence and secure the tie.
Currently Maitland is sitting in
fourth place in their loop of the
NMGHL, but will have to wait until
other teams finish their seasons to
see if fourth place will be their final
standing.
The girls now have a week to
prepare for the annual international
Silver Stick coming up Feb. 2, 3,
and 4 in Sarnia.
Midgets end season with tie
A bullet by Greg Tiffin to the
upper glove side of the Seaforth
goaltender was the deciding goal in
Saturday's game five for the
Stainton Midget Rep team.
After both teams had repeatedly
come back from one-goal deficits
throughout the game, Tiffin made up
for a missed breakaway with six
seconds remaining in regulation
time by scoring the winner, taking a
perfect pass from Chris Jutzi less
than a minute into overtime.
This was a good team win with all
three lines contributing on the
scoreboard.
Tiffin had another goal plus an
assist with Wade Stephenson also
adding two goals and an assist.
Nathan Thomson, Blake Scott and
Graham Ashcroft added singles
goals. Jutzi had two assists with
Thomson, Ashcroft and Tyler
Stewart adding the others.
Niall Jones had the win in net.
Wingham will now play Minto,
with the schedule yet to be
determined. Check

Tuesday night ladies’ curling at
the Wingham club is proving very
popular with lots of fun and some
great rock shots.
In action on Tuesday Jill Eadie
defeated Cathy Donnelly 7-3.
Marg Moffat was a 7-5 winner over
Ann Crawfort. Kayla Bishop
doubled up on Sandra Morrison
with a 6-3 win while sister Keisha
Bishop suffered a 7-1 loss at the
hands of Ainslie Weishar.
***
In the Tuesday competitive
league Aart DeVos had full rock
control as he downed Shawn
Cottrill 11-3. Russ Taylor
squeaked out an 8-7 victory over
Rob Middleton and Earl Fitch was
a 6-4 winner over Bill DeVos.
In the other game Don Edgar
went down to defeat to Calvin
Ruttan.
***
In the Wednesday mixed leagues
there were a couple of one-sided
scores as Steve Burke downed
John Dailleborst 10-3 and Wayne
Horton was a giant killer with a 10-
1 victory over Earl Fitch.
Tammy Adams doubled up on
Aart DeVos with a 6-3 win. The
fourth game was a close one with
Leanne Elston edging Dean
Newson 9-8.
***
In the Thursday mixed league in
a battle of the Bishops, daughter
Kayla showed dad Kevin how the
game is played with a 10-6 win.
Cam Alton was a 10-8 winner over
Bill McDonald and youth
prevailed as Elliott Miller doubled
up on Mike Cottrill with a 6-3
win.
***
In Friday night action Shawn
Cottrill was a 7-5 winner over
Lynn Hickey and Barry Simpson
downed Simon Logtenberg 8-3.
Hugh Clugston had one of those
nights you would like to forget as
nothing went right and he came on
the low end of a 15-1 score in a
match with Wayne Waechter.
***
In Monday daytime action Ivan
Dow was a 9-5 winner over John
Mann and Les Shaw was a 10-5
winner over Bill Deans. Ross
Peacock kept his winning record
intact with a convincing 9-5
victory over Nelson Frank.
In the other game without a
doubt the “the premier skip of the
week,” and incidentally the senior
skip at the Wingham club was Jim
Coultes. He gave up one in the
first end then settled down and
with a big five ender, then a bigger
seven ender, went on to a 15-2 win
over Wendell Stamper.
In afternoon action it was Bruce
Robertson, 9, Ron McMichael, 3,
Norm Fairles, Irving Elliott, also 9-
3 and Stewart Leedham a 9-6
winner over Mac Inglis.
***
In Thursday daytime action the
results were: Ivan Dow, 9, Wendell
Stamper, 8, Norm Fairles, 10, Ron
McMichael 6, Mac Inglis, 7, Irving
Elliott, 3 and Bill Deans, 11, Jim
Coultes, 4.
The afternoon games were very
much one-sided as John Mann
defeated Nelson Frank 14-3 and
Stewart Leedham downed Bruce
Robertson 15-2.
Nice to see Lloyd Wheeler back
in action after a bout with
pneumonia. He let Ross Peacock
continue to skip and Lloyd threw
the lead rocks. This team
continued their winning ways with
a 12-2 victory over Les Shaw. The
question is “Who is going to hand
this team their first loss?”

Congratulations to Kayla Bishop
and her Bantam girls rink from
Exeter as they have qualified for
the Bantam girls Ontario
provincial championship to be held
in Oshawa Feb. 8, 9, 10, 11.
All local curlers wish the best of
luck to this up-and-coming curling
star and her rink from Exeter at
Oshawa.
Incidentally this is Kayla’s
second trip to provincials as she
was a member of the local junior
girls team skipped by Leanne
Elston which played in the 2006
Junior girls provincial
championships.
Without a doubt Bishop is one of
the young rising stars on the
curling scene.

The country curlers mens
bonspiel, sponsored by Brussels
Livestock, W.G. Thompson Feeds
and Elliott Nixon Insurance was
held last Saturday with a full field
of 16 teams from the area and from
Guelph, Seaforth, Chesley,
Oakville and Listowel.
In the 9 a.m. draw the Don Rae
rink from Guelph downed the
Listowel Doug Green rink to win
the early draw. (Don Rae was a
former Wingham junior curler and
another member of his team was
former Brussels resident Jim
Wheeler.)
In the 11 a.m. draw two local
rinks waged a rock battle with Aart
DeVos’s team defeating a strong
Murray Shiell foursome for the
draw win.
It was a close battle for the J.R.
Coultes, Bull Trophy with the Aart
DeVos rink eking out a win over
the Don Rae foursome by the
slimmest of margins - a mere one
quarter point.
In his path to the crown Aart
used no less than six members.
Team members were skip Aart
DeVos, vice Rod Wright, lead Ross
Peacock and three different
seconds, first game Murray
McNichol, second game Allan
DeVos and final game Bruce
Pewtress.
