Thme bidding probably was fairly
uniform, At one table at least it was:
as follows:
North East South West
1S Pass 38 Pass
4S Pass 4NTo' Pass
5D* * Pass 6$ Pass
Pass Pass
*Blackwood asking bid
'' *Response showing one Ace.
With 41/a honour tricks and 9 play-
ing tricks in support. of North's spade
bid, the only question with South was
whether the contract should be a small
or a grand slam. The Blackwood con-
vention revealed a missing ace, and
avoided the possibility of an ,u makable
grand slam contract.
On the bidding East made his nat-
ural lead, the nine of spades. Declarer
won this trick in dummy and immed-
iately led the ten of clubs.,sThe scheme
he had in mind depended on West hav-
ing the ace of clubs, which was the
case.
Put yoUrself in West's place. A
glance at dummy shows that the only
chance to defeat the contract is to win
two club tricks, and that chance will be
very remote indeed if he covers the ten
with his ace. At any rate, West did
not play his ace, in consequence of
which .North won thirteen tricks, and
with them a top duplicate score.
One of the thrills of bridge is to suc-
cessfully perpetrate a hoax on the op-
ponents. There is that much mischiev-
ousness in most people, and very few
bridge •playeis would be found among
the exceptions.
