Red Front Grocery
With "complete stability of prices no
onger possible" Donald Gordon,
Chairman of the Wartime Prices and
Trade Board, has appealed to the Can-
adian people for public support and
patience during the period of control-
led readjustment.
In a series of five broadcasts, unimme
in the record of the Prices Baord, the
chairman reviewed the present econ-
omic situation as it refers to supply
and demand of housing accommodat-
ion as well as to food and clothing.
Forecasting spiralling prices if con-
trols were suddenly removed the chair-
man stated that "if a controlled and
orderly readjustment is preferred, how-
ever, some controls will have to be
continued for a long while yet. Can-

farmers, storekeepers, manufacturers
or landlords, will have to recognize
that the price of a controlled readjust-
ment is willingness to accept responsi-
bility for price control by going easy
in what may be regarded as just de-
mands for higher wages, higher prices
and higher incomes."
Referring to the removal of controls
in the United States Mr. Gordon said
this step would have a "marked in-
fluence" on this country, "BM," he
continued, "even granting that the play
of economic forces must, in the' long
run bring price levels of both countries
into an equilibrium, it is nevertheless,
possble for Canada, to avoid the painful
type of sharply inflationarY -and sub-
which are all too evident in the land
of our .great neighbours."
The Board chairman stated that it
should not he long before the 'United
States picture becomes clearer and it
is shown whether or not large scale
production will rapidly stabilize prices
and he added that "then we can choose
