11011111CK FALL FAIR
SUCCESSFUL EVENT (4;,!‘ •
.Held In Fordwich on Saturday With
Good Attendance
Favoured .with ideal weather, the
87th annual exhibition of the Howick-
Agricultural Society, held last Friday
.and Saturday, in Fordwich, was an un-
qualified success in almost every way,
The exhibits were not as numerous in
;many sections as might be desired, but
the quality was not lacking. In the
stock ring, the light horse section was
for some reason unusually light. Com-
„,netition in heavy horses was also less
keen than usual, The ,exhibits in the
with the exception of fancy work,
were tip to usual standard.
Starting off with the parade of pub-
lic school children at about 1 p,m., Sat-
urday, a crowd of 2,000 or more throng
aed the Agricultural Park. The parade
was exceptionally good, 12 of the
.townships 18 school sections being re-
presented, Inspector J. 'M. Game,
.complimented the Fair Board, the pup-
ils and teachers on the apparent effort
.expended on this feature, after which
he announced the three winners as fol-
lows: Sr, room of .Gorrie school, Miss
Jean Spading, teacher; S. S. No. 1,
Miss Isobel Darling, teacher; S. S. No.
12, Mrs. Ruth Harris, teacher,
The fair was officially opened by
Wm. S. Campbell, president for 1946.
After Mr, Game's remark's, the assist-
.ant agricultural representative for Hu-
ron, Mr. Nelson, was introduced. He
explained that it was his first visit to
Fordwich and spoke briefly of the
pleasant impressions formed.
The musical contests for school chil-
dren were conducted by Ken Edgar.
The :children's section in the hall,
:particularly the displays of various
schools, attracted much attention, and
worthy of special mention was the lar-
ge exhibit of manaul training—handi-
crafts of public, school pupils of How-
ick—arranged and supervised by Ken.
Edgar, the instructor.
The numerous/ concessions on the
grounds created a real carnival spirit,
and we heard of no unpleasant inci-
dents. Two \county constables were on
duty throughout' the clay and evening,
aprLarently keeping everything under
control.
The aeroplanes did a thriving busi-
mess we understand, using adjacent
farm lands for their base of operations.
, The CKNX Barn Dance in the-arena
at night attracted a huge crowd, the
program being broadcast as usual over
the Wingham Station. The CKNX
Ranch Boys provided music for lan-
cing until midnight, also in the arena.
-This entertainment has been ;used by
the Fair Board in former years, but
this is the first time it has been at-
tempted locally in other than a hall.
The success of ,the venture will no
doubt ensure future use of the arena
for such events. '
Fair Day was also Tag Day for the
Blind, the Howick Lions Club spon-
soring this campaign for funds for the
Canadian National Institute for the
Blind. 'Teen age girls, canvassing in
the villages and at the Fair, collected
total of $112.36. This amount with
substantial donation from the Lions
Club, ivill go forward this week to help
"share a little of the sunlight with
-those who live in the -Shadow”.
The list of prize winners will be
fottnd on pages seven and eight,
