Theft of the safe was prevented • when Mrs. Lorne Vallante, wife of the county constable, awakened by the the 500-pound safe, roused her hus- band. The bandits made their escape on foot following a running gun battle with Constable Lome Valiance in which six shots were exchanged be- tween the constable and the bandit's lookout, posted at the front- door of the building, • Following a tip received' from Ar- thur Spillett, district farmer, that he had teen two men running for cover of email woods a short distance from his farm, provincial police squad cars raced to the areao situated 21h Miles west of here but failed to fled any trace of the men. 116 information leading to the where, riboutt of the third man, separated' from his companions during the shoot: leg affray has, been received by the police. a. 1101VICK LIONS HELD OUTSTANDING FROLIC Large Crowd Jammed Wroxeter Street Thursday Night Favoured with ideal weather, though rain threatened from mid-afternoon on, the fourth annual street frolic of the Howick Lions Club, held in Wroxeter on Thursday evening, August 8th., was in many ways the most outstanding success in the Club's history. • Proceedings started with a snappy softball game between Clifford "Swing Skirts" and the Brussels girls, leaders in their respective groups. The latter team won 'by a 9-5 score, giving the ,Clifford girls their first loss of the season. "Fish" Kemp of Listowel, of- ficiated as umpire. The Lucknow Pipe Band provided entertainment at the park and on the street throughout the proceedings. A midway concession, replete with mer- rygo-round 'and ferris wheel, proved a very popular innovation, particularly among the young folk. The only disappointment was the comparatively small attendance at the concert in the Hall, by the Happy Cousins, Concert Company of Elmira. Last year this troupe drew a packed house in Gorrie, and we do not think the drop this year was any reflection on the artists; rather, there were just too many attractions outside on such a nice evening. The old-time dance in the Hall to music by the CKNX Ranch Boys with George Jordan as floor manager, and the modern jitney • on the street with Wilbee's Orchestra were both highly popular. The bingo and other games as usual also the large refreshment booth did a thriving business throughout the night. At about 12.30 o'clock the draw was made for the eighteen major prizes on which tickets had been sold for weeks past, Ken Edgar was master-of-cere- monies for this interesting part of the proceedings, with L. E. Cardiff, M. P . for North Huron, and John W, Hanna, M. P.P,, for Huron-Bruce riding mak- ing the draws alternately. Each ad- dressed the gathering briefly over the public address system ' as did also Lion President "Mac" McKenney, who thanked all for their patronage of the Howick Club's big effort. . The winners of the various prizes were as follows: Sparton Radio and Record Player, Stanley Hobbs, Pres- ton; C.C,M. Bicycle, Ruth Johnston, Toronto; Electric Handy Chef, Wes. Newton, Wroxeter; .Sparton Radio, Howard Harris, Fordwich; Tri-Lite Floor Lamp, A E. Guidal, Wroxeter; Atlas 600x16 Tire, doriated by Lion Nels. Hunkin, Imperial dealer, Bel- more, J. E.
