Mr. Chester Bennett left on Satur- day on a business trip to the West, A shower was held in the Hall on Monday evening for a newlywed coup- le, Mr. and Mrs, Bruce Harkness of Carrick. The evening was spent in dancing and the young couple were the recipients- ofrnany gifts, Mr. and Mrs.. Morley Bell were vis- itors on Sunday with Mrs. Bell's par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. Hanna, Teeswater. Mr, and Mrs. Elmer Farrish spent Sunday with friends near WhiteChurch. Mr. and Mrs, Joe Earngey 'of Han- over, visited the former's mother, on Sunday. Mr. Mervyn Stephens of Thorndale, spent the weekend with his mother, Mrs. R. H. Stephens. The Junior room in the Public school is closed owing to the illness of the teacher, Miss Jane Brown.' Mrs. Robt. Douglas and Mr, Elmer Dickison visitedtheir sister, Mrs. Percy Ashton on' Monday. Mr. Con Reever, 17th. con. passed away very suddenly on Monday night. The sympathy-of the community is ex- tended to his wife and daughters, Mrs. Burns 'Stewart and Mrs. R. Loutitt. ' Mr. and Mrs. R. Houghton and son, Mr. Ed, Houghton of London, were guests on Sunday of Mr. anci,Mrs. Ar- chie Scott. Mrs. Pyke has returned to her home after spending the past month at the home of her brother, Mr. Ted New- ton. Mr. Reg Newton has sold his home to Mr. Charles.'of the Howick Wal- lace boundary. Mr. Newton and fam ily intend moving next month to the farm they recently purchased from Mr. Lorne Robinson. Mr. Leland Ashton, Toronto, spent the week-end with his mother, Mrs. Robt. Ashton, The Jacques family re-union picnic was held in the park on Saturday. There was ,a large attendance, some coming from Stratford, Woodstock and Listowel. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harrison and Miss Doreen, were visitors in Listow- el on Sunday, with Mr. and Mrs.Jack Douglas. Mr. and Mrs. Wardie Schaefer of Fordwich, spent Sunday with Mrs. Schaefer's father, Mr. Frank Cole and Mrs. Day. Miss Marigaret Ruttan of Toronto, spent the week-end with her parents°, Mr. and Mrs. Anson Ruttan. Sunday, June 16th.; Rev, W. 13. Smith of Toronto, will occupy the pul- pit of the Gorrie United Church. Mr. Smith is an able speaker and will speak on Temperance' in its relation to the present day, Mrs. Isaac Wade Rosalind Stepenson, widow of the late Isaac Wade, passed away at the home of her, daughter, Mrs: D. W. Dane in Toronto, early Saturday morn- ing, June 8th., in her 82nd.- year. Al- though in failing health for the past three years she was confinel to her bed only about a.„Week. Mrs.' Wade was the youngest daugh- ter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stepenson and was born in Howick Township where she spent all her life, She was married in June, 1883, to Is- aac Wade of Howick Township, who predeceased her in Feb. 1944. She is survived by one son and two daughters, R.. W. Norman Wade of Gorrie; Mrs. Arthur Miles, (Jennie) and Mrs.. D. W. Dane, (Laura), of Toronto, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was a member of the Anglican church also of the Women's Auxil- iary while she was able to attend. The funeral service was held. on ,Monday afternoon, in St. Stephen's Anglican Church, the rector, Rev. J. C. Caley conducting the service assisted by Rev. G, G. Howse of the United church. Interment was made in the Gorrie cemetery: The pallbearers were her three grandsons; Whitney Dane, and Ron Miles of Toronto, Robert Wade, Sarnia and three nephews, Jas. Stepenson, :Ft; rdwich, J, D. Jackson, Harriston, and Clarence Wade, Bel- grave. Those from a distance who attend- ed the funeral of the late Mrs. Isaac Wade on Monday, were Mr, and Mrs. Ben D'Arcy, Silverwood, Mich.; Mr. Norman Kernigan, Mrs. Archie Wil- kin and son, Geo." Mr, and Mrs. Nelson ,Gowdy were recent visitors with their daughters in London. Mr. Lorne Robinson is home from Guelph where he has spent the last month, The 44th annual meeting of the East Huron Women's Institute will be held in the S. S, room of the United church on Thursday, June 20th, The sessions will be at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Miss Hopkins will be guest speaker, Mrs. Lloyd Taylor will speak for the Fed- eration of Agriculture, A cordial in- vitation is extended to the women of the community to attend the afternoon meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Newton have re- turned from a very enjoyable trip through the Western States and' Can- ada, Mr. W. C. Ferguson, Mr. and Mrs, Roy Ferguson and daughter, Mrs. C. Hill of Blackstock, visited with the former's brother, Mr, Sam Ferguson, several days last week. These two gentlemen are both octogenarians. Mr. Sam Ferguson being 94 years of age and Mr. W. C. Ferguson 84 years old. A gathering of twenty-four of their relatives was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gregg on Wednesday evening when an enjoyable time was spent. ,A. large crowd 'gathered in the hail on Tuesday evehing to honour Mr, and Mrs. Bower Farrish Who were recently married. The evening was spent in dancing, Miss Doreen Harrison read a congratulatory address to which both responded. They were the recipients of many lovely gifts. Citizens of- Gorrie and community are asked to please leave donations for National Clothing Drive at E, W. Whitfield's; Cam. Edgar's or R, H. Stephen's stores. The Women's In- stitute have been asked to assist in this Clothing Drive which begins June 17th., and closes June 29th. Mrs. Wm. Pyke has returned to town after spending the past meMth at the home of her brother, Mr. Ted Newton. OBITUARY Mrs. Geo. H. Breen Mr. R. J. Breen, sr., Turnberry, re- ceived word last week Of the death of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Geo. H. Breen, of Grand Rapids, Mich, Her death took place on Tuesday and funeral services were held on Friday. Besides her sorrowing 'husband, she leaves to mourn her loss, two sons, Howard and. Irwin, and one daughter, Evelyn. Dr. Wm. J. Elliott A former resident of Turnberry, Dr. Wm. J, Elliott, passed away suddenly in Brandon, Man., on May 29th., in• his 66th year. He was born on the 4th. concession of Turnberry, and on his graduation about 35 years ago went West to practice. He is survived by four sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Milton McVittie, Flint, Mich., Mrs. Alex Currie, Nelson, B. C., Mrs. Albert Walters, White- church; Mrs. Allan McTavish, Luck- now; Jas. J., on the homestead, Turn- berry; Gordon, Whitechurch; and Al bert of Regina, Sask. Thomas E. Small There passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital, London, on Sunday, June 2nd., Mr. Thomas E. Small, in his 74th. year. The deceased was born in Wingham, son of the late Robert and Margaret Small and resided in Forest for the past several .years. He is sur- vived by his wife and one son, Blake, of Detroit. One sister, Mrs. John Raby, Wingham, one brother, David of Grand Rapids, Mich. • The funeral service was held from McFarlan's Funeral Chapel, Forest, on Wednesday afternoon, -conducted by Rev. L. , Jacklin, rector of Christ Church, after which the remains were taken to Wingham for interment. Rev, J. James of St. Paul's Anglican Church, conducted the service at the grave. T.he pallbearers were: Messrs, Wm. Hammond, D, B. Porter, R. A. Spotton, Jas. Murray, E. Wilkinson and F. Carter. SALEM Miss Minnie Linklater called on friends in London one day last week. Mrs. John Lane and Miss Myrtle Cathers spent a day last week in Kit- chener. A large number from this locality at- tended the floral service in Wingham last Sunday. A number from around here attend- ed the funeral last Monday of the late Mrs. Isaac Wade of Gorrie. Mrs. Wm. Weir spent one day last week with her son, Mr, W. E.
