Public Life Soon

Canadian' Strike Definitely Out
Toronto—The definite assertion that
there would be no sympathy strike ac-
tion by Canadian, railwaymen, was
made by J. J. Hendrick Canadian vice
president of the Brotherhood of Rail-
way Trainment. Asked whether there
was any possibility of a Canadian rail
strike, he replied; "None whatever."

Says Milk Subsidy Cost Was
$20,000,000 A Year
Ottawa—The government subsidy of
two cents a quart on fluid milk, being
discontinued May 31, has cost approxi-
mately $20,000,000 a year since its in-
ception in 1942, Chairman Donald Gor-
don of the Prices Board said in a state
ment reviewing the history and effect
of the payment. In the last year, with
increased milk consumption, the cost
of the subsidy reached $21,000,000 said.
Mr. Gordon, adding that the figure re-
presented subsidy payment alone and
did not include operating costs of more
than $500,000 yearly,

Karl Hermann Frank Hanged
For War Crimes
London — Prague radio announced
that Karl Hermann Frank, former
Reich's proctector for Bohemia and
Moravia, had been publicly hanged as
a war criminal. Frank' was convicted
on charges of responsibility for the
massacre of Lidice—a village of about
500 population.
Mazerall Guilty of Espionage
Ottawa -- EdW'ard Mazerall, slim
young Research Council engineer, was
convicted of conspiracy in a Soviet es-
' pionage ring. Sentence was deferred
by Chief Justice J. C. McRuer until
May 31st. In the setting the tentative
date of May 31 for sentence the chief
justice told R. A. Huges, counsel for
Mazerall, he would have an opportun-
ity meantime to submit a memoran-
dum dealing with Mazerall's back-

Play Well Received
The farce in three acts, "Me, Him
and 'I" was presented in the commun-
ity Hall, 13luevale, by a cast of young
people from the Presbyterian church,
Behnore, recently and was well receiv-
ed by a large crowd. The characters
were well chosen and the parts well
enacted. Music between acts was sup-
plied by Earl Elliott and Mrs. W.
Brewer. A reading by Miss 13allagh
of Belmore and Miss Betty Brewer
sang.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mathers and
daughter, Elizabeth of Lucan, spent
the week-end with relatives here.
Mr. and Mrs. Gully of Wingham,
spent this week with Mr, and !Mrs.

ited Church, Rev. S. J. Bridgette
spoke from the text, "Go with Him
Twain", Miss Irene Brooks of Tor-
onto, favored with a solo, "Beside the -
Still Wafers."
Rev, L. C. Jorgensen at Knox Pre-
sbyterian Church had for his subject,
"Abel's Sacrifice" which was more ex-
cellent than Cains. It was accepted
by God and still speaks of Abel. The
choir sang "The Beautiful Garden of
Prayer."
United Church Mission Band
The Mission Band of the United
Church meet in the Sunday School
room on Thursday afternoon, the pre-
sident, Delores Hamilton, presided. All
joined in repeating the Mission Band

At the annual W.M.S. Presbyterial
meeting held recently at Wingham,
Mission Band was presented with a
new diploma, this is the 6th year that
the band has received the standard of
recognition. Miss Margaret Curtis
told the story from the Study Book,
telling how the natives of a jungle vil-
lage in Africa were taught to ask,
God's blessing on their gardens, rather
than make Sacrifices to evil spirits.
