The Wingham Advance-Times, 1946-05-02, Page 7'Thursday, May .Zad, 1946 WINOTTAIV4 ADVANCE-TIMES of discourtesy, 13tit serictusly,` I lied never had such a silly 0:legion put to' me. Silly' it was worse than silly; it was embarrassing, it was dishonour- ing, it was ineelting. And, moreover, there was no answer to it, As well ask me my notion of an ideal Circle.' There is no ideal circle,:because all circles are ideal and must be so else they are not circles. Circles are round, must be round, Baseball Umpires must be around when a game is on, else they are not Umpires, And assum- edly not ideal Umpires, I can say this much of them, nevertheless, Baseball Umpires are so real, that they :cannot be ideal, They are the realist things anyone can have any idea of. The players in the game know this, and the spectators are very soon convinced of their stern and austere reality. Bow- eyerl do know a thing or two about umpires. I know, for instance, that they are born not made, .No power on earth could make an -Umpire, or con- ceivably wish to make one. Their ex- istence, of course, cannot, be denied. They exist, but they never grow any older, or in any way change, They re- main static, the same, yesterday, today and forever. They are all alike, yet no two• of them resemble each other. They dress alike, and they never de- thur from a certain way of behaviour. No one of them ever does anything that you wouldn't expect all of them to do. They are usually pretty dumb, be, Cause their vocabulary is strictly lim- ited. Their talk is dome by arms and hMids, by gestures of these organs ve- hemently indulged in and from which there is absolutely no-appeal, I could further elaborate, but what's the use, You all know these birds. They are part of the 'game. They may abuse the players sometimes, but they always amuse the spectators. They are a nee. essary evil, no rose without a thorn you know, Worship the King, Eleanor Ashton read the Scripture lesson from Luke Chapter 19, verses 9 to 16, also St, Matthew's Gospel, chapter 27, verses 21 to 25, Thou hidden source of calm repose was the second hymn chosen, Thelma. Denny gave a very interest- ing topic, under the heading of Christ- ian Stewardship, During the business period $3.00 was voted to the National CounUl. The hymn. I said to my girl inquisitor. Do you expect an ans- wer right off the bat, or do you want me to do time and think up a suitable and serviceable reply? You are usually pretty quick on the trigger, she ex- torted. I admit that, I said, •but al- though you ought to be shot for ask- ing of me such a question, I will re- press my sense of justice, and you shall go scot free, provided you exe- cute a rapid departure. She executed accordingly leaving me all alone with a perturbed conscience, and a seizure GOODPEAR THE 3 TO 41 CHOICE OF CANADIAN MOTORISTS :SW By 48,2 DONALD RAE & SON, WINGHAM, ONT. A.
