It has been my privilege during the
past few years to have visited several
hospitals which have recently been
constructed in widely separated places.
As one visits these modern institutions
and becomes familiar with their vari-
ous up-to-date appointments and then
compares them with the average small
hospital which serves a community
such as ours, one is very envious' of
the people who have at their door,
so to• speak, the facilities of these
splendidly built and equipped hospitals.
One of the things that impressed me
was the fire-proof construction. The
outer walls were for the .most part
brick and tile, the floors cement with
a traazza finish, the inner walls brick
or other fire-proof material, with metal
or asbestos lath, and a coating o f
specially treated hard wall plaster,
The door frames, in many cases, were
metal 'and fire doors :between old and
new parts of the buildings gave an
added fire protection:
In 'the halls of some of these fine
buildings Was laid a heavy linoleum
to ease the task of those who serve
the sick and to lessen the noise as
does the sound-proofing on some ceil-
ings. Most of these hospitals had a • very modern nursery and one could
stand in the hall and view the babies
through glags windows. This was a

Pte. John T. Brooks of Lower
Wingham, son of Mrs. Clarence
Brooks, arrived in London ,Tuesday
noon, He has come back from over-
seas on the Duchess of Bedford
landing at Halifax. John enlisted in
the Perth Regiment in May, 1940, and
proceeded overseas with that unit in
October, 1941. When the regiment
went to Italy in November 1943 he
was still on the strength. That regi-
ment took part in the storming of the
Hitler line and he was wounded at
that time. After a fewmonths' in
hospital and convalescent camps, h e
returned to the Perths. In February
this year just prior to the regiment
leaving Italy for the Western Europ-
can front, John was stricken with
diphtheria and was left in hospital
there. He later went to England to
be repatriated.
