THEE CANDIDATES
SEEK ELECTION IN
HURON-BRUCE RIDING
,(Continued from page one)
for re-election asking for a chance to
carry on in the post-war days and an
opportunity to do. a job for Huron-
Bruce. I believe that I have given
every minute possible to try and serve
you and I feel that I have accomplish-
ed quite a lot during the short time
I havd been in the Legislature. The
result of this two years work by the
Drew government has been great and
he said they should be given the op-
portunity for a full term and this
would be of benefit to Ontario and
Huron-Bruce. I will if elected on
June 4th, serve you to the best of my
ability. I spent much time getting
acquainted with the various depart-
ments of the government and I believe
that this would be of great assistance
to me and to you if you elect the on
June 4th.
He extolled the people to choose
wisely and get good leadership, and he
said Mr. Drew could give this leader-
ship. He said that Torn Kennedy.
minister of Agriculture, had a fine
program. for agriculture and .he should
be giveii the opportunity to carry it
out.
William J, Mackay
Mr. Mackay said it was a pleasure
to appear before you this day. I have
had legislature experience, 1920 to
19.34, I had to take the oath that I
would not do anything in contraven-
tion of the election act, I want all my
colleagues to carry on a clean cam-
paign so that if I am elected I can
take this oath honestly, You will get
the legislation you deserve if you elect
the proper government: I am glad he
said, that the people of Ontario and
Huron-Bruce are facing the final
issue and ,it cannot be repealed, He
charged that the Drew government
did not co-operate with the Liberals
to keep in power. They did in the
house, he said, but not in the patron-
age of the ridings, . I appeal to you
for your support and if you succeed in
putting a Liberal government in
power you will be very fortunate.
William C. King
Mr. King said he was very proud to
be on this platform this afternoon in
the interests of the C.C,F. We are a
party formed by the common people,
he said, farmers, labor and' small
business people, We have much
Propaganda out about us in papers, on
radio, in boolcs, that misrepresent us
and the facts of C.C.F. policy. He
asked. "What has the old parties done
through the years of depression?"
They just waved the flag, he said.
Are we going to let them do the same
thing over again? We were allowed
to drift and drop down to financial
degradation, and had it kept on many
would be without home and farms.
He charged that money was taken out
of parliament to try and win the elec-
tion. They are determined to win and
if you do not think so read their lite.r-
ature. No money made me a C.C.F.
and it will be same again if we let
them in. 85 per cent of the farms are
mortgaged. They say that we the
ADVANCE-TIMV,S
Thursday, May 31st, MS
C,C,F, are going to socialize the whole
country, We are the people who make
the policy and would be taking our
own farms, he asked,
We arc making a great, appeal to
the people and ask for your support,
The C,C,F, promised to support the
Government in all legislation for the
benefit of the Ileople, He charged
mismanagement of" the stock yards
since the government took them over.
In the midst of surpluses there was
want he said, and the government
stood idly by, After you send a
representative to Toronto of the other
parties you have to send delegations
to get what you want, If you eletc
me, lie said, I will be your delegate.
I will come to you, you will not have
to conic to me, If you. elect me. I will
do the best I can. Your interests are
my interests, he said,

By order,
I. M. SOMERVILLE,
Secretary,
PePartment of Public Works,
Ottawa, May 25, 1945,
Speaking of Hydro he said that
under the Drew government five mil-
lion of dollars would be saved to the
users each year and the plans were
ready to erect '7000 miles of new lines,
and these plans would bring hydro to
85 out of every hundred. 45 miles of
Hydro will come to Huron-Bruce at
once. Seven of Drew's cabinet mini-
sters are veterans of the Great -War
and they will do what they can for the
returning soldiers of to-day, He said
the boys overseas had used Ontario
House greatly, 10,000 on V-E Day,
and 750,060 calls all together, Speak-
ing of the school grants he gave as
illustrations: Lucknow will receive this
year $7274 as against $1619 in 1944;
Wingham this year $10,709 in compar-
ison to $1754 last year; Blyth $2265 as
against $533 in 1944.
Speaking in reply to M.r. King in
regard to farmers in a party he said
that the Drew government had 40 per
cent farmers while the C,C.F. had only
one farmer member in the house,
Hydro had been 1 /4redneed from $56.00
per horsepower to $30.00 under the
Drew administration. He also said
that he was assured by Torn Kennedy,
minister of agriculture, ,that things are
O.R. at the stock yards and that they
are being run by a committee of
farmers arid not people from New
' York or Buffalo as they were before
the Government took them over,
