Allen and Mrs. Small of To- ronto, were week-end guests with his parents, Mr, and Mrs, Ed. Small, Mrs. W. Waram and, Miss Pearl Eckenswiller, Reg, N., of Toronto, are visiting with Mrs. A, E. VanStone, Mrs. 011ie Thompson of Listowel, who recently ,tinderwent an operation in London, is visiting with her daugh- ter, Mrs. R, S, fleth'erington, Squadron Leader James and Mrs. Thompson visited with his Sister, Mrs, R. S. Hetherington, last week. .Jim is stationed on the West Coast. Mr. and Mrs, W, A. Russell, Mrs, N. L, Fry and Mrs. A. E. VanStone, were Sunday visitors with Rev, John and Mrs. Pollock at Alsia Craig. Rey. Kenneth and Mrs. MacLean of Exeter were also visitors that date at the Pollock home. At the morning service the special preacher was the Rev.. Mr, Stewart, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, Mrs. Russell's brother. Jacob Cathers One of Huron County's oldest citi- zens, Jacob Cathers, passed on at the residence of his son, Mr, William 'Cathers, Lot 13, 14, Concession C., Turnberry, Monday, May 7th, in his 'nth year, He was ill but a short 'time. A native of Fermanagh, Ireland, he received his education there earn- ing to Canada in 1871. He settled in Howick and has been a resident of that district since that time. He farm- ed for many years prior to his retire ment. His wife was the former Jane Finlay of Howick and she predeceas- ed him May 18th, 1942. Surviving are four daughters and two sons, Mrs. Maggie McCreery of 'Howick; Mrs. Dave Cathers of Howick; Mrs. ThoS. McMichael, Wroxeter; Mrs. Fred Lewis. Turnberry; William A., of Mrs, Sam Brisco Mr, Adam Robertson received word from Seattle, Wash., that his sister Elsie, Mrs, Sam Brisco, had passed away suddenly in her 75th year. Her husband predeceased her several years ago. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Clinton Olney, and a brother James, both of Seattle, also one sister, Mrs. John Menzies and two brothers, Adam and George, all of Wingham OBITUARY SALEM Miss Jean Sharpin of Wingham, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morrison Sharpin., Miss Muriel Neill of Wingham, vis, ited for a couple of days recently with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Neill, Mr. D, L. Weir, reeve of Howick attended the couch meeting in Pord- wich last Saturday. Sunday school opened last Sunday with a large attendance, and may it continue to prosper for the coming summer. The following spent a sbbrt while on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs, W. Weir; Mr, T. P. McDonald and Mr. Bert Edgar from north of Teeswater, also Mr. and Mrs, Robert Ireland and Mr. and Mrs. David heland from the Teeswater Vicinity. Mr. Nelson Gowdy from north of Pordwich, called on his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gowdy one day recent- WEDDINGS Ballagh - Murray The marriage of Ramona Katherine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.. William J. Murray, Lyleton, Man., to Henry J. Ballagh, son'of Mrs, Ballagh and the late William James Ballagh of Tees- water, was solemnized at Ethel on Saturday, April 28th, Rev. S. H. Brenton of Ethel United Church, of- ficiated at the ceremony. The bride was charming in a gown of cameo blue sheer, with a corsage of pink roses. She was attended by her cousin, Miss Myrtle, Switzer, who wore a royal blue gown of crepe with a corsage of red roses, The groom's attendant was Mr, Jack McKague of Teeswater. For travelling the bride wore a blue suit with black accessories. Follow- ing a short honeymoon trip, Mr, and Mrs. Ballagh will reside in Teeswater. Turnberry, and Charles of Howick. He is also survived by 17 grand- children. He was an Anglican in re- ligion. The funeral is this afternoon (Wed- nesday) from the residence of his son William, Lot 13, 14, Concession C, Turnberry. Rev. J. L. Foster will con- duct the services. Burial will take place in McIntosh Cemetery. WESTFIELD The Y. P. met on Wednesday even- ing with a good attendance. The meet, ing was led by Norman Taylor, scrip- ture lesson was read by Eileen Taylor. The Lord's prayer was repeated in un- ison. Topic was given by Roy Buch- anan, The meeting closed with the benediction, and social activities were enjoyed under the leadership of Rev. Snell. A number of ladies attended the Presbyterial meeting at Goderich on Thursday, Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Mareen, of Goderich, visited on Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. Gordoni Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wightman and Miss Margaret visited on Thursday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Staelthouse of Prutefield. Mrs. Earnest Crawford and babe of near Hamilton, are visiting'her WOO Mr, and Mrs. Pred W. Cook, "Say, Joe, can you tell me why there are fewer railroad accidents than auto accidents." Joe: "Well, perhaps not exactly, but I thing one reason is because the engineer isn't always hugging the fire- man." Miss ,Margaret Harris is at present home with her mother, Mrs. James Harris, reouperatnig after an operation for appendicitis. We wish her a speedy recovery. There will be combined service of the S. S and church here next Sunday,, Mothers' Day at 1.30. A full Mothers'. Day programme is being prepared. WIS. PRESBYTERIAL TO MEET NEXT WEEK Practices Planned For Tuesday And Thursday Nights The first meeting of the Howick baseball team' was held in the Gorrie rink on Wednesday last week. Norman Carson was chairman of the meeting; secretary appointed, Everett Ashton; Captain of team, Donald Wilson; Manager, Glenn Johnston; -Coach, Geo. Galloway; Caddie, Dave Neilson. It was decided to hold practices two nights a week, Tuesday and Thurs- day. In case of bad weather the practice for that night will be carried over to the next regular practice night. Practices-will be held in Gorrie, In the schedule it was decided to play home games on Tuesday night and those away from home on Thurs- days. Games will be played in Gorrie, Maitland Presbyterial Meets in Ilefolesworth Church, May 15 The 31st annual meeting of the Maitland Presbyterial Society of the W, M, S. of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, will be held, in St. An- drew's Presbyterian Church, Moles- worth, on Tuesday, May 15th, 1945. The president, Mrs. A. G. Reid, will preside. The theme: "Our High Call- ing in Christ", The morning session, commencing at 9.45 will be opened with devotions conducted by mem- bers of the Bluevale auxiliary, Re- ports will be presented by the secre: tary and treasurer, and Mrs. A. Mc- Auley will conduct a forum on mis- sionary topics, The afternoon meet- ing will open at 1,30 and members from Ripley will have charge of the devotional period. Mrs. C, H. MacDonald and Mrs, A. G. Reid will report on the Provincial annual meeting. The special guest speaker will be Mrs. H. C. McKeller, Provincial President. The election and instal- lation of officers will be conducted by Mrs. J. Linklater. LEGION DISTRICT MEETING AT GALT Wingham Legion was represented on Sunday at Galt at the annual meet- ing of District C of the Canadian Leg- ion, B.E.S.L., by five members , W. G. Hamilton, C. R. Coultes. Walter VanWyck, Archie Peebles and W. W. Armstrong. Comrade Gordon Thompson of Kitchener was re-elected District Commander for a term of two years and Comrade Gellatelly of Kitohener was re-elected secretary. There was about 275 in attendance and many motions respecting veter- ans' affairs were considered and sent forward to the Provincial Command for further consideration. At the noon hour a very impressive service was held at the Cenotaph. Morning and afternoon sessions were held with dinner being served in the Legion , Hall.
