Mrs. Les- lie Saunders is spending the winter at the same home, Mrs. R. S. Hetherington Jean, Ian, and Rae, returned home on Satur- day after visiting with her mother, Mrs. 011ie Thompson, Listowel, for the past month. Sgt. Ralph Baird is spending a fur- lough with his 'parents, Mr. and Mrs. George 13aird, prior to reporting to Mountain View. Ralph spent nearly a year in Labrador. LAC. Clarence Hamilton 'who has just finished a course at I.T.S., Vic- toriaville, Que., is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr.' and Mrs. Robt. Hamilton, Clarence is training to be a pilot. Pte. Rheatha Sinnamon of Camp Barriefield, is spending a furlough at her home here. Pte. Sinnamon and Pte, Bailey have completed six months of army life and by all reports are still enjoying it. Pte. Bailey returns home next month for her furlough. OBITUARY Alex Porterfield From all parts of the county and many from distaht points were present at the funeral of the late Alex Porter- field in Knox Presbyterian Church, Belgrave, on Friday afternoon last week. The high regard with which he was held throughout the county was shown by the large number in attendance which overflowed the church. The service was conducted by Rev. Kenneth MacLean, minister of St. Andrew's Presbyterian church, Wingham, and he was assisted by Rev. G. H. Dunlop, pastor of Bel- grave United Church. The pallbear- ers were Ex-Reeve R. R. Redmond of East Wawanosh and the present council, Reeve J. D. Beecroft, Council- lors Harvey Black, Lewis Ruddy, Norman McDowell, Alex Robertson. The flowerbearers were James Ander- son, John IvIcBurney, D. Chamney, H, Cook, Alex MoBurney, Wan. Man- ning, T. Brydges, C. 1:71. Wade, Geo. Johnston, Stuart McBurney. Burial took place in Brandon Cemetery, Mr. Porterfield will be greatly mis- sed in the community as he was clerk of East Wawanosh for 37'years and was active throughout his life in every worthwhile activity. He was 67 years of age and was born on the farm, at Marnock where he spent his entire life. Be was an elder of the church and was most interested in all church work. Thirty-six years ago last June he was married to Miss Maud Code of Morris, who now survives him: Also surviving are one brother, William, of Calgary ,and two sisters, Mrs. Garg- atet Ferguson of Bayfield and Mrs. Ernest .Geddes of Seaforth. A sister, Mrs. Ellen Geddes of Wingham pre- deceased him a few years ago, Wallace Goodyear Wallace Goodyear, of 27 Mount Pleasant avenue, London, died Satur- day in St, Joseph's Hospital in his 83rd,year. Born in England, 'he came to Canada 71 years ago and for the past 30 years had lived in London ex- cept for one year spent in Wingham. Mr, and. Mrs. Goodyear recently cele- brated the 60th anniversary of their wedding. He is survived by his widow, Isabel- la; a son PO, Goodyear, Vanguard, Sask.; four daughters, Mrs. Allan Richardson and Mrs. Lorne Richard- son, Strathroy; Mrs. Fred McAlpine, Wapella, Sask,; Mrs. Omar Hasel- grove, Wingharn; two sisters, Mrs. William Lidster, Bothwell; Mrs. C, K, Woods, Saginaw, Mich.; a brother, Arthur Goodyear, Bothw'ell, Funeral service will be held in the George E. Logan and Sons funeral chapel, on Wednesday at 1 p.m, Burial will be in Bothwell Cemetery, Edward Groves For some 40 years an employee of the Stratford Chair CoMpany, where he worked as foreman; in tile shipping department, Edward R. WEDDINGS Ellacott - Humphrey Miss Brenda Nonie Humphrey, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Hum, phrey, of Rudgwick Post Office, Eng- land, was married recently to Sergt. Joseph William Ellacott of Wingham, son of Mrs. Ellacott of Wingham. Sergt. Ellacott is in the 4th Light A. A. Regiment, R.C.A. The wedding which took place at Rudgwick Parish Church, was conducted by the Vicar, the Rev, A. N. Wynn, The choir was in, attendance and Mr. Charles Tate from St. Paul's Cathedral, sang "Jerusalem". The hymns were, "0 Perfect Love" and "The King of Love My Shepherd is", together with the 67th Psalm, "God be Merciful unto Us and Bless Us.," Miss Humphrey, who was given ,in marriage by her father, wore a pale peach georgette and lace dress with a evil to match. She had a headdress of grange blossoms and carried a bouquet of orchids and roses. The best man was the bridegroOm's brother-in-law, Sergt, Frank Hopper. A reception was held in the Village Hall and was attended by over 60 vests, after which the bride and groom left for London, where their honeymoon was spent. MRS. W. B, 'McCOOL. Reports of Cdmmittees Mr's. W. H. French gave the report of the knitting department, 462 pounds of wool were 'purchased during the year at a cost of $688.96.. 72 pounds. are in stock not including what is in the hands of workers. Knitted articles sent to headquarters and given to local boys were: turtle-neck sweaters 112; Long sleeve V-neck sweaters 38; sleeveless sweaters 86; helmets and toques 333; gloves 200 pair; mitts 25 pr.; hurricane mitts 42 pair; turtle- neck tuckin 3; scarfs 8; socks 493 pr.; seamen's stockings 26" 117 apair; sea- men's socks 75 pair; areo caps 5, In addition to the above the following was knit for the British Bomb Vic- tims: boy's sweaters 70; girls sweaters 53; women's sweaters 11; 1 and 2 yr. IA sweaters 8; boy's knitted suits, 2-year- old, $; boy's socks S pair; baby bon., nets 5; baby booties 4 pair.; babies dresses 2 year, 4. Mrs. W, J. Adams reported that dur- ing the year 47 sweaters and 04 pairs of socks. Were given to boys that have, gone from Wingharn. Since 1940 236 sweaters and 472 pairs of socks have been used in this manner, In 1942 five girls received writing portfolios. W, covers 143; pillow slip 26; triangle bandages 359; girl's slips 25; boy's pants 23; boy's shirts 58; girl's dresses 138; women's dresses 10; boy's pyjamas 93; girl's shirts 6; girl's pant- ies 117; boy's outfits consisting of 1 coat; 1 pr. pants, 1 shirt, 1 pr. braces, 14; caps and wool hats 95; quilts 260; afghans 25; comfort bags for women's services 32. Mrs. C. B. Armitage reported that 30219 compresses large, medium and small pads were made. More help is required for this work. Mrs. W; M. Connell reporting for the shipping committee said 13 ship- ments were made, total number of cartons 150. Mr. R. A. Coutts has been on this' committee since the Red Cross was formed and has not miss- ed one shipment. Blood Donor Report This report was given by Mrs. W. 5. Greer the convenor of this activity. She said that this department had de- veloped into one of the most import- ant lines of work of the Red Cross across Canada. =--We have had nine 'clinics here and the nuumber of don- ors have steadily increased. She spoke highly of the splendid staff of workers and mentioned in particular the assist- ance of the local doctors and nurses, The Lions Club takes a great respon- sibility for the clinic seeing that the necessary equipment, beds, tables, etc:, are in readiness. They also finance the clinic. Johnston, presided at all meetings. 4, special meeting was held previous to the campaign and collectors were am,. pointed, $599.43 was raised and 'given to Wingham Red Cross, who in return supplied -Bluevale with yarn, 183, knitted articles were completed and 46, garments were received from Wing, ham for the sewing quota and return, ed finished. The unit used its fund* for sewing mostly pyjamas, women's. ' and children's dresses and quilts, over 200 articles, Funds were raised by collections at meetings, when quilting& were held, sale of salvage, sale of ' tickets on various articles donations from the B, B. Club at Browntown, dances and a commonity• night spon- sored by the Women's Institute an& Men's Club. The need is still great and the unit urges all to continue to their part. The Whitechurch unit made the, following:, quilts 118; crib quilts '9; afghans 1; sweaters 5; • chilken'S, Sweaters 2; turtle-neck sweaters 1; Soaks 18. pairs; seamen's socks 9;:. gloves 9 pair; scarfs 2 from S, S. The Whitechurch area donations to the campaign was $645.50.
