PRICES FOR HOGS
Huron County Deputations Has Con-
ference With Hon. James Gardiner
• Warden B. W. Tuckey, Thomas
Wilson, Douglas L. Whyte, George
'Armstrong, J. Turnbull and,,W. Dale,
members of a joint committee from
the 'Huron County Councils Agricul-
tural Committee and the Htiron Coun-
ty Federation of Agriculture confer-
red with Hon. James Gardiner, fed-
eral minister of agriculture at his
home in Usborne Township Saturday
afternoon, They were assured by the
Minister that if a higher price is need-
ed by hog producers to maintain the
output, an increase will be granted.
The committee was appointed at a
meeting in Clinton oe Thursday night
with instructions to interview the
Minister. -The appointment was ar-
ranged while Mr. Gardiner was at his
home for a short visit, The commit-
tee was asked to request a floor price
of $20 per hundredweight for dressed
hogs at Toronto. •
Mr. Gardiner told the committee of
a new two-year bacon agreement with
Britain and said that Huron County
production "must be .maintained at all
costs." When the agreement was
signed a higher price had been taken
info consideration, he added,
"If a' higher price for hogs is nec-
essary ,the price will be granted," he
said,
Members of the committee said
were well satisfied with our reception
by Mr. Gardiner."

ed in a small town, asked an old man

REPORTS. INDICATE
SALVAGE NEED
STILL URGENT
The collection of war salvage con-
tinues to be urgent; actually the need
is increasing rather than dimishing.
Recent statements by Prime Minister
Churchill, President RoOsevelt and
Prime Minister King have strongly
emphasized that the war is not won
yet and that a long,
„
hard road lies
ahead for the United Nations. Fats
and bones, scrap metal, rubber tires
and tubes, and rags are on salvage
lists. , In. some sections of tile Domin-
ion, paper is also urgently needed.
Every housewife can' help the war
effok, by saving fats and bones from
her cooking. , They provide glycerine
for explosives, and when everyone
helps, it doesn'l, take much to .blast
the Axis.
Scrap metal is an item which can be
found in many attics and basements.-
The children of the family, can help
out in this collection by keeping-their
eyes wide open. Recently in Winni-
peg, five youngsters all nnder ten,
found' an old cement mixer in a vacant
lot., They turned it into the school
scrap pile.
Tires and tubes, of which 10,000
tons are urgently needed by Decernber
31st, are required for military reclaim
purposes. The stock of miscellaneous
scrap rubber is now such that this
type of rubber is no tenger on salvage
lists.
Rags, Particularly cotton, are requir-
ed by the Royal Canadian Air Force
for use as cleaning wipers in various
air stations across Canada Rags are
also required to wrap delicate pieces
of Machinery for shipment, and for
use in various war industrip.
Except in. those areas from Edmon-
WA to Port. William, paper, especially
corrugated, is an important item
Paper should be collected only in those
areas where economical Shipment Can
be made to waste paper dealers or to
constaning mills. Waste paper has a
variety of uses. After necessary
treatment by the Mills It can he used
as containers for AditS, as ifiglItatiOtt
