The Westfield United Church Sun-
day School held their annual picnic by
the Maitland river in Mr. Earl Wight-
man's grove. A very enjoyable time
was had by all. The young people en-
joyed a lovely .game of baseball. There
were faces and games for everyone
and a great deal of solid intercourse
for everyone, at last but not least
Game the supper which the ladies
generally provided, and to which
everyone did full justice. Everyone
enjoyed themselves and felt it good

with their son, John, who has for
some time been assistant station agent
at that place.

Women's Institute
Mrs, Allen Munroe opened her home
for the August meeting of the W.
on Thursday last, There was a good
attendance, The meeting was presid-
ed over by the. president and opened
with the singing of the Ode and re-
peating the Lord's prayer in unison.
The motto for the month was read by
Mrs. H. B, MciCenney, Mrs, F. Ham-
bly was in charge of Current Events,
touching on many subjects of interest,
including the making of Jam with less
sugar. The growing of the African
Violet, The headlines in War News
of the day, the Blood Donors Clinic,
closing with a fine bit of verse, The
Roll Call—A Current event on Insti-
tute work brought a varied and profit-
able response. The Autobiography of
a postage stamp was the topic given
by Mrs. IL Waller, who traced the
story of the stamp from its manufac-
ture until it had reached its destina-
tion through the mails carrying an im-
portant message at a small cost of 3
cents.
During the business session Mrs.
McKenney, convener of the Waste
Fats collection committee gave a re-
port of their achievements so far 175
lbs, were collected and sold for which
a cheque for $10.00 was handed to the
secretary. Mrs. McKenney spoke
briefly, telling of the need and asking
for further effort on the part of the
community in this project, Three new
members were added to the roll. At
the close of the meeting, tea was serv-
d. Mrs. F. Sanderson and Mrs. Denny
assisting the hostess and a social hour
was enjoyed.

Mrs. George Edwards was hostess
to the members of the Guild of St,
James Anglican church on Tuesday
of last week. The president, Mrs. F.
H. Scherk presided opening the meet-
ing with the Lords' prayer. A mom-
ent's silence was observed in memory
of a dear departed member, Mrs. Elsie
Paulin followed by her favourite hymn,
"Lead Kindly Light." The scripture
lesson was read by Mrs. H. V. me-
Kenney who' chose' St. Marks Gospel,
chapter 18, verses 1-10. Minutes •of
last meeting Vier reed and approved.
Roll call was answered by the pay-
ment of fees. A paper was given by
the president, Mn.e Scherk on The
World of Churches, several exerpts
from the enthronement sermon by the
Archbishop of Canterbury. The sing-
ing of the Church's one Foundation
and the prayer for victory brought the
meeting to a close. Dainty 'refreh-
ments were served by the hostess, Mrs.
Edwards. The quilting meeting of the
Guild will be held at the home of •Mrs.
Robt. McMichael or Mrss H. Waller
of which further notice will be given.

Wright and his bride (nee Pearl.

The farmers are busy cutting their
grain crop. Some of the grain had
gone over quite badly, as with so
much rain it seemed weak in the straw.

Help To Chinese
When Madame Chiang Kai-Shek
was in Ottawa during her recent tour
the Red Cross presented a cheque for
$100,000 end that amount represents
one fifth of the Red Cross objective in
the amount to be sent to China this
year, At the same time the Junior
Red.Cross presented $10,000.
Call To Workers
The Red Cross Rooms are again
open each Wednesday afternoon for
work. More workers are urgently
needed to complete the new quota.
Please come and lend a hand. Waste
fats may be left at the Red Cross
rooms any Wednesday. Anyone hav-
ing even a small quantity arc asked to
bring it in, as Fats are urgently need-
ed, in our war-effort containers such
as coffee tins with lids are also needed.
Draw For Quilt
The draw for the Victory Quilt
donated to the Women's Institute by
Mrs, W. T. MacLean and on which
tickets are being sold in aid of Chinese
Fund and Milk for Britain Fund will
be made at the concert given by the
Howick Lions Club at Gorrie on Fri-
day night.
