Carol Boneschansker of RR 1, Ethel
discovered an interesting thing behind an
old picture frame the other week - an old
pamphlet celebrating the 50 year mark of the
Massey-Harris company.
On the front of the pamphlet is the date
18/97 and on the back is the date 1847. The
pamphlet which is obviously very old and
fragile has been taped together with stickers
bearing the name of H.L. Jackson, watch-
maker and jeweler. Nobody had much
information about H.L. Jackson except
Evelyn Kennedy, editor of the Post, who
recalled that he was here about 50 years ago
and lived on , Mill sreet. Mrs,' Clark
Matheson also remembered that he was here
for a long, long time.
The pamphlet is also stamped in several
places with the name of Walker's Furniture
Emporium. A little more information was
available on this business due to a previous
interview with Max Watts regarding an'
addition to his funeral home. From that
interview it was learned that a man by the
name of R.L. Leatherdale started a funeral
business in Brussels in 1877, operating it as
Leatherdale's Furniture Emporium and
Undertaking until 1906 when he sold out to
David Walker, who was also an undertaker.
At that time according to Mr. Watts,
funerals were mostly conducted out of the
homes with even the embal ming done at
the homes. Mr. Watts said that the caskets
were made at the furniture store and
customers would come down and pick out
the lining. '
David Walker, the second owner of the
business took in a partner, Malcolm Black, a
school teacher. The two men had their
furniture and funeral business located on the
main street in what is now known as the
Streeton block. They later moved to the
former Export Packer's building.
The next owner. D. A. Rann bought the
business from Walker and Black in 1931
carrying on both the furniture and funeral
business in the same location until about
1939 when he purchased the Grand Theatre
or what is presently known as the Royal
Bank. Mr. Watts purchased that funeral
home in 1969 and built his present one in
August of 1977.
The pamphlet also imparts the following
information: A diagram of stars, reports that
"Every star in this constellation represents a
Massey-Harris binder now at work in some
foreign land. How many are there of
them?--19,315. This immense number of
machines has carried the name of Canada
into many corners of the globe where it was
previously but little known."
Below is another message which states,
"the farmers at home also give this famous
Canadian machine the highest praise.
Experience has proven that the Massey-
Harris wide-open is the only binder which
can handle successfully the big grain crops
of the Canadian north-west."
The next page talks about the rise and
growth of the Massey-Harris cultivator trade
and an unparalleled record in the implement
business. It also states that 969 had been
made and sold in Canada and 25,464 had
been made and sold in all parts of the world
at the time they were celebrating their 50
years in business.
The Brussels Po tit would be interested in
hearing from anyone who makes an
interesting discovery like Mrs. Bones-
chanskers and from anyone who has more
information on the watchmaker.
The picture, left, illustrates
the outside cover of the
pamphlet.
Below is a copy of some of
the inside of the same
pamphlet celebrating Massey
Harris' 50 year mark.
