constitute a threat to Canada's
livestock; the disease is spread by
biting insects.'
"Australian officials
immediately notified us of the
new strain of bluetongue, and we
have acted accordingly," Mr.
Whelan said. "The ban on
imports, a step also taken by New
Zeland and the United Kingdom,
has been imposed to make certain
that the disease doesn't reach
Canada."
Sixteen months ago,
Agriculture Canada imposed a
guarantine on all animals in a
ranching area of British Columbia
because of the outbreak of
bluetongue. Up until that time,
Canad had been free of the
disease. A massive test-and-
slaughter prograni.was launched
by the department which resulted
in the disease being contained
and eradicated.
Australian authorities now are
surveying the distribution of
affected animals and of the insect
carriers. A slaughter program
for cattle and large-scale
vaccination program for sheep
seem possible to halt spread of
the new bluetongue strain.
