The Brussels Post, 1977-11-30, Page 3is coming
They help to bring it in. By their own good
lives and deeds, they help usher in 'this
messianic age.
Whenever I ask the Christian when the
Messiah is coming, he usually says The
Messiah is already come. And they say it
without much spark or energy. He's come.
That's that. Period. It's over. That ends it. All
that Jewish joy and ferver aren't there.
I suppose we all know a hope realized or a
dream fulfilled isn't nearly as great as •the
anticipation of it.
So I think the old church fathers knew what
they were doing when they put Advent into
the church calendar -- those four weeks of
'preparation for Christmas. They knew how
easily we take past events for granted. How
we lose our enthusiasm and expectation. How
we devoid them of all spirit and life.
They knew we need a time to th ink, to
renew, to relive and to build up the
excitement. They knew we need to stretch out
the longing and the waiting, to whet ourselves
for that Great DesireofNations. Those 28 days
of Advent march us forward day by day to that
grand event of Christmas Day. They want us
to feel every year some of the longing and
waiting that attends each great Christmas
arrival.
I can start to feel it all already - the carols
lifting, . the excitement mounting, the
momentum gaining, My daugahter-in -law
Anne said the other day, "I'm getting excited
already."
The church fathers knew how all of us older
embattled warriors of many Christmases past
become: sated, unmoved, indifferent. They've
given us four weeks to get ready.
So here's your 'chance. Get ready. Christ
Xmas is coming.

THE BRUSSELS POST, NOVEMBER 30, 1317 —3
Christmas
Well, this is it.Christmas is on its way.
Santa's been through town on his annual
parade ride. The Grey Cup game is over. The
preacher preached his first advent service last
Sunday. Ralph Wietersen in Borlinholni
unloades his first truckful of Christmas trees
at his country store.
And outside there's a deep spread of snow
made even whiter -- at nighter -- by a big
full moon.
Only one more full moon. From November
25's full moon to December 25's full moon.
Then it's Christmas time once agin. It's time
when the Christian world celebrates the
coming of their Messiah hi the manger stall in
Bethlehem.
Christmas is coming a little early to our
house this yeas . For the last month or so, I've
been putting . together a Christmas radio
program on the Messiah. I've asked many
Jews about the Messiah and his coming. And
with hardy an exception, they say he's
coming. Of course, he's coming. One Man
answered, "If not this minute, then the next."
And he's not the only one. I get that feeling
from so many of the Jewish people. He's
coming. H e's almost here. He's on the verge
of coming. The time is ripe. The time is full.
Any minute these pregnant times will deliver
a messiah.
It's thi,s kind of spirit -- this kind of
expectation that surrounds the Jewish hope.
And if their hopes aren't grounded on a
particular person called Messiah, then it's
located in an age, in .a new day coming, a
better day coming.
This Messiah day coming always sits on the
edge of their horizon. It urges and surges
them toward' the future. And they're not
passively waiting, either. They're not just
pushed toward this great day at dawning,
It appears the county is
attempting to reach salary
negotiations around the .Six per-
cent guidelines set cloWn by the
Anti-Inflation board. At Friday's
meeting in the•eounty chambers,
Goderich, councillors saw several
salary adjustments proposed by
the various committees, and
endorsed them all.

department received increases for

Social Services Committee
received six per cent increases -
one $780 per annum to $13,520
and one $624 per annum to
$11,232.

assistant administrator, the
recreation director, the. food
supervisor, the nursing director,
the housekeeping supervisor, the
chief engineer, the stockkeeper
and all registered nurses received
an extra $32 bi-weekly, an
average increase of sit per cent.
Also at. Hurorivfew, the operat-
ing engineers got an increase of
32 cents per hour bringing their
salary to $6.67 per hour and
service employees in • all
categories received an increase of
30 cents per hour.

house an extra $33 hi-weekly to
$587 every two weeks. The chief
custsodian, Jim Sheardowft, is
due to tetite on Jaiiiiary 19 0 1978.
