new building were held Saturday,
April 30. Manning the shovels
were Reeves Cal 1Crauter of
Brussels, Bill Elston of Morris
and. Roy Williamson of Gray.
Construction began the
following Monday, May 2.
It was also decided in April that
a memorial plaque should be
placed in the new building lobby.
Anyone donating $500 or more to
the arena fund was given the
opportunity to have the name of
someone they wanted
remembered placed on the
ARENA CHAIRMAN-4im Prior, chairman of the
arena building committee, said a few words before
he passed the shovel on to the politicians at the sod'
turning ceremony'at the new arena site on Saturday
afternoon. Mr. Prior's committee has spearheaded
organization and fund raising for the $600,000
building. Construction is. scheduled to start this

The memorial plaque was,
planned to be an ongoing means
of raising funds for the
construction and continued
operation of the Community
Centre.
Fund raising activities
continued throughout the spring
and summer, and brought some
unexpected benefits to those who
contributed to draws.
Among the big winners were.
Doug. and Debbie Trollope of
Brussels, who came to a Lion's.
Club elimination draw May 14,
Area people will get their first
chance to see the finished

The program gets underway at
4 P.M. when the build* will b e
open for inspection and members
of the committee will be on hand
to answer questions about the
building's facilities.
The organized program gets
underway at 5:30 when the
memorial plaque will be unveiled
in the lobby. Arena committee
chairman Jim Prior will preside
when the plaque is unveiled by
retired. Brussels Public School
teacher Mrs. Margaret Tyerman.
Dedication will follow by Dr. G.
Hazelwood, Jack Bryans,
Chairman of the memorial plaque
committee„ will give the closing
remarks.
A beef barbeque will follow
from '6 to 7' p.m. catered by
Campbell and Cardiff.
At 7:30P.M. the ° official
opening ceremonies begin. 0
Canada will be followed by a
selection played by the Brussels
Pipe Band. Chairman Jim Prior
will speak, as will Building
Committee chairman Hank Ten
Pas.

Proceeds from the draw
amounted to more than $5,000,
which the Lion's gave to the arena
fund.
On June 1, it was reported that
only $36,000 remained to be
raised from public contribution .
To tal public contribution stood at
$181,572, at the beginning of
June.
Today, those contributions
stand approximately $205,000
according to Jim Prior, and
money is still trickling in. Mr.
Prior estimates that about
the key to the building to Mr.
Prior.
Following the presentation of
the key by the contractor, Mr.
Prior will in turn present the key
to Wayne Lowe, chairman of the
the Recreation Committee.
Remarks by Mr. Lowe will
follow. Rev. Enid LeDrew will
give the dedication.
Former Reeve
McCutcheon will introduce the
$25,000 more are all that will be
needed to Clear the debt.
On November 26, the arena will
officially open its doors for the
first time. It will be the fulfillment
of a dream for a lot of people, and
a moment in which the people of
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Township can pause for a moment
and reflect with justifiable pride
on, a building which- for a long
time to come will stand as a
testament to what can be
accomplished when communities
work ,together for a common
cause.

Following. Mr. Sinclair's
remarks the ribbon will be cut by
MPP Murray Gaunt and MP
Robert McKinley.
Closing remarks will be made
by 'Mr. -Prior, and a selection
played by the Brussels Pipe Band
and God Save the Queen will end
the ceremonies.
A dance will follow.
