The committee expects to
receive seven or eight tenders
from contractors for the erection
of the structure, designed by
Maitland Engineering of
Wingham. The deadline for
submissions is March 11.
One contractor has suggested a
mid-April start on the building
with completion by mid-October.
Mr. Prior said he told the
meeting taht he expected other
contractors' projected building
times would be about the same.
The committe has made
application to the Ministry of
Culture' and Recreation for a
grant of $50,000 to cover the cost
of an elevator for the handi-
capped. Mr. Prior felt that the
design and facilities of the
building would meet the
requirements set down by the
Ministry. "We have an excellent
chance of getting the grant" he
said.
A by-law passed Monday by
the Brussels Council designating
the new arena as a commu nity
centre means tithat the committee
can seek further funding from the
Community Centres branch of the
Ministry of Culture and
Recreation, Mr. Prior told the
meeting.
' Grants from Wintario should
cover the balance of the money
needed to build the structure.
"We've been given very good
assurance that 'we will get what
we have asked for," Mr. Prior
said.
The arena committee is to meet
with the executive of the curling
club Thursday to settle one of the
major sources of confusion about
the arena and the facilities it will
contain. "We hope that we can
iron out our problems," Mr. Prior
said."

About $171,000 has already
been ,raised from Brussels and
area private donors, -leaving a
goal 'of about $48,000 still to be
raised, Mr. Priory said. The
remaining $48,000 has to be
raised from the public as
municipal or debentured funds
don't qualify for the Wintario two
for one funding, he told the Post.
"We're going to raise it, that's
all," the chairman said optimis-
tically. Once people see the

The curling club for a time
considered the possibility of
buying and repairing the old
building, but in the end rejected
the idea as too expensive.
Following a series of meetings
with the arena committee, the
curling club wad assured that its
needs would be met by the n ew
arena. Special locked storage
facilities were designed into the
lounge area the curlers would
use, and with that, the occasion-
ally heated disagreements
between the two sides were
largely resolved,
On March 23, the Post reported
that the' cost of the new arena
would be $695,000. The cost was
established after contractors bids
were opened March 18 in a joint
arena committee and council

Arena committee chairman Jim
Prior told the Post Tuesday
morning that his committee, in a
meeting Friday night with
Brussels council, selected. XDG
Ltd. of Kitchener, the lowest of
six 'tenders at $695,000, 'to build
the pre-engineered steel arena.
Completion date according to
the agreement with the
contractor, is October 15 acid the
new arena should be "Usable by
that date", Mr, Prier Said.;
The arena committee` has
received notice that the new
building will qualify for a 100 per
tent grant for an elevator. That
takes nearly $29,000 off the
contract price.. Mt, Prior
commented.
