In recent months both
consumer groups and
government agencies have
released startling figures
that show a great increase in
major repair imel dents and
Salt, spread on .a roadway,.
helps clear ice and snow
when the temperature
doesn't fall too low,, It does
something else.. Salt and
moisture combine to. form
brine, and the brine -attacks
any metal whether its'part of
the highways structure,
bridge or vehicle. The result,
after time, is ri.ist.A study for
the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency put the
total economic cost to the
community of salt-induced
corrosion as. almost 15 times.
the cost of buying and
spreading the salt. More
than two million tons of salt
are spread every year on
Canadian roads and streets
according to the Roads and
Transportation Association
of Canada. That amount.
keeps increasing. Ontario
and Quebec use a large
portion of that total. For
instance, the RTAC
estimates the city_ of .
Montreal averages 100,000
tons a year - as much as the
amount used in. all .
of Western Canada. Aside
from the salt spread to clear
ice and snow, there is a
serious effect in coastal areas
from sea salt. Rust sets into
metal most quickly in warm
and humid conditions; brine
is most damaging in weak
solutions. Passing.. vehicles
costs since the introduction
of self-serve gasoline
stations in Ontario. Th e
reason for the sharp increase
is because people want to
save gasoline money and
splash salt brine against car
windows; and brine seeps
down into door wells where
some of it can be trapped to
start corrosive action. Salt
brine combines with dirt on
paved roads, and becomes
packed into hidden areas of a
Car. Dirt and stone thrOwn up
by turning wheels can chip-
away protective coatings,
leaving the bare metal
exposed.
One of the best, and
cheapest,. methods of
combating salt is washing.
Give your car frequent
wintertime washings - of all
exterior surfaces, including
those underside areas that
can be reached - in order to
help 'prevent a buildup of
corrosive salts.
Every three months polish
your car with a good wax
recommended by the
manufacturer, to protect the
paint and bright metal
surfaces. At the same time,
make a check of the drain
holes in door panels to
ensure they are not plugged.
The spring washdown with
large quantities. • of clear
water is particularly
important to avoid the
possibility that watered-,
down brine solution will stay
at work -through the mild,
Warmer weather, especially
on' humid days.,
either don't know how or
refuse to keep tabs on their
car's ,vital fluids and 20 or 30
thousand miles down the
road the repairs are
astronomical.
The .checks are easy ,to
make, you don't have to get
dirty and it only takes 2 or 3
minutes. If yOu can pump the
gasoline you should be able
to make these simple
checks. Read your owners
manual for the exact po-
sitioning of the various check
points or see the ajoining

How to combat salt
SIMPLE C'HEC-kS-SAVE-MONEY — By checking your car's vitals you can save
, costly repairs later. Lift the hood and pull out the oil dipstick #1 wipe it and insert
and pull it out again checking to see the oil is at the correct level. Remove the rad
cap #2 note color and level of coolant. Unscrew battery caps #3 and note acid level.
Start engine and place gear selector in Neutral (N). Pull out transmission dipstick
#4 check level. These 4 steps should be done at each fill up. Remove #5 air breather
lid to check cleanliness of element and check windshield washer fluid #6 Brake fluid
#7 and belts located behind the fan at least once a month. All levels of fluid and belt
tensions should correspond to the owners manual in your glove box.
