Doug Mayer contracted polio in
1953 and walks with the aid of two
crutches but this hasn't stopped
him from being active in the
sports field.
Doug, who is 25 and lives in
Brussels, competes in the Ont
ario Games for the Physically
Disabled which includes the
blind, amputees, people in
wheelchairs and others disabled
in some way.
The events at these olympics,
are of the same type as took place
at the Montreal Olympics with the
exception of the marathon and
with the exception that the people
who compete are disabled in
some way.
There are three levels of
competition in Olympics for the
disabled - provincial, national,
and international.
The benefits of this kind of
olympics are numerous, Doug
believes and they apply not only
to the participants but to the
spectators as well.
Doug thinks those who compete

taxpayers' pockets, according to
Energy Minister James Taylor.
Eighty-two per cent of the total

in disabled sports, do, so for
reason of ego, self-fulfillment or
both.
The Olympics provide an
alternative for somebody who has
a lesser physical function,
according to Doug.
"They can attain the success
in a wheelchair that they can't in
a normal state,". "This gives
them something they can identify
with," Doug said.
Games for the disabled have
been going on at the provincial
level since 1967 and Doug has
been participating for three
years.
Doug belongs to the Twin
Cities Spinners Recreation and
Sports Club in Kitchener. He
became interested in sports and
the club when a friend asked if
he'd be interested in playing
wheelchair basketball. His
interest has expanded from there
and he recently returned from
Northern Ontario where he was
doing promotional work towards'
the setting up of similar clubs in
other areas.
The insurers for Ontario Hydro
will seek to recover the remaining
amount, but if they are unsiic-
cessful, users will be forced/ to
foot the bill. The fire was
attributed to a faulty generator
belt. The one-year warranty had
expired seven months before the
fire.
A number of trappers have
come to me recently and have
expressed displeasure at being
required this year, for the first
time, to get written permission
from all landowners in writing
before a licence is issued by
Natural Resources.
I asked the Minister, Mr.
Miller, in the House about this
matter, and he said that the staff
has been told, at least for this
year, to back off that requirement
while the Ministry 'reviews the
matter.

The promotional tours for the
formation of new clubs and
workshops were held in the
morning. In the afternoon, the
public was invited to watch the
wheelchair basketball games so
they could see firsthand'what the
club was trying to accomplish.
Doug says he competes in the
Olympics for the enjoyment of it.
"It was something new for me
to do, a challenge" he said.
He has competed in basketball,
field and swimming events.
Swimming is his strongest event'
and he has taught it for the past
eight or nine summers.
Doug has just come back from
University in North Carolina
where he is about to complete a
Master of Science Degree in
•Recreation and Administration.
He also has a BA in Recreation
and Administration from the
University of Waterloo.
Doug has had several of his
papers published, one of them
explaining how people with his
kind of training can help with
therapy for hospital patients. A
paper he has written explaining
how better accommodations could
be made for disabled people is
pending publication.
Doug says his academic
training from the U. of W. has
provided him with the back-
ground he needed for his courses
in North Carolina, an
opportunity to write, to travel and
to do research.
...Doug says he really enjoys
speaking to people and if any

My class and I went to the
apple orchard. We had some
apples and the next day we made
applesauce and at home we had
apple pie. I tried to make apple
butter and when I went to the
apple orchard they gave us apple
cider. It was good, my whole class
loved it and the sauce we made
was good and yummy.
