Stratford's
City Centre
There I was working in the city for three
days and gathering up some of my daily
bread. And all during that time, I was readyto
come home bt my good country living. Reidy
to leave the city's rush and crush. Go back to
the simple life that's all summed up in the
mailing address .of Bornholm, Ontario.
And then what do I see as I walk in my front
door? Three numbers pasted on my yellow
brick church 390.
Hehhh, what's going on here? Is this any
way to treat a fellow who's been away to the
city? I thought I just left a city where everyone
needs a number. Where everyone's so
bunched up 'together either sprawled out or
resting on top of one another. There's no
doubt about it they do need some kind of
sorting out system.
But in the country? Where R.R. Bornholm
has done me right for seven years now? I've
always liked that address. It's simple and it
says a lot. It says I live in the countryside. It
says I live in a place that's small enought so
the mailman knows where I live.. It says I live
in a community-where most of us know one
another, if not personally then in name. And
when my kids play with some one else's kids, I
know who they're talking about, or at least 'I
recognize the family name. •
In the country, you rest easier. You 'know
who's who, and who's where. What's what
and who's what and where's what. It's all laid
out so easy in mile and a quarters in
concessions and side roads. And if those lot
and concession numbers fail you, then you can
always count on the naives of people Who live
on them. The side road down from us is
Meyers sideroad. And nearby is Pete's corner
or more recently named Calvin's corner.
Now, that's a story in itself. Ever since last
summer, a homemade sign in hand painted
black letters hangs on a roadside maple. It
says "Calvin's Corner". I've waited for days
to hear the origins, but no ones.-helping me
out. But I'll need more than one good reason
to call it Calvin's Corner. Peter Hinz had that
corner staked out for all his lifetime. So who's
this Calvin person taking over?
You'd think getting a new house number
was enough for one week. But nO:ti hear I live
on a new road. I :now live on Church St. It
doesn't take yards of imagination to figure out

that one. What with the old German Baptist
Church and St. Peter's Lutheran almost within
shadow distance of each other.
But then it didn't take all that much
imagination, either, to find a name for
Brodhagen's main street. It's now official.
. Bring on the capital letters. Brodhagen's main
street is now Main Street.
What if I don't like getting all this big city
stuff? Street names and numbers? What if I
don't like house number 390? Who says I lhave
to be house number 390? What if I like even
numbers better?
Don't I have a choice? Isn't anybody asking
in like the names? Isn't anybody telling me
about this change? maybe I don't read the
right newspapers or get the right mail, but -I
knew absolutely nothing this change coming
in my life.
Don't they realize? A name change is
important. It, usually happens when real
shaking events happen in your life when
you're baptized, when a woman gets married,
or people immigrate to new countries or
someone enters holy orders. Name changes
are serious things.
And so are numbers. , I've got plenty
enough already. Social security, driver's
license, car license numbers and insurance
policy numbers used to be enough. Now it's
credit card numbers, O.H.I.P. and key
account checking numbers, and postal codes.
I should have known something elese was
up when those postal codes came in. Three
years ago it intruded on my simple Bornholm
address messing it up with NOK 1AO.
I never did like it from the start. Now, I
wasn't only a number but a letter, too. I
always wondered what was going on in
Ottawa. if the U.S. could postal code its more
than 200 million people into nubmers, why
did the Canadians need numbers and letters
to do our 20 million?
And now this latest. So here I am -- all fitted
out in a city address. Making it easy for the
police to find me . For the Fireman to pull up
to my smoking house. For the bill collector
and salesman to knock on my door.
Someone out there may tell me this is all
progress. But I think it's going forward -
backwards.
