REGULAR, INTEREST The age of air travel, with all its speed and advanced techno- logy, has brought with it one of t he most powerful forms of crime the world has ever witnessed, the hijacking. These mass kidnap- pings have become so prevalent that they are becoming a plaque to the entire world. Air travel has become one of the safest and most convenient forms of intercontinental trans- through the portation development of highly sophisti- cated instruments and carefully engineered jets. The jumbo jet has made ocean crossings, which once took months by ship, an everyday (or at least common) thing for many people. Air travel is as safe as riding in a bus. Everyone knows, of course, that good things just cannot last, and this one didn't. Criminals, political subersives, any maniac saw air travel as a way to attract attention; to raise money; or to further their cause. By holding the • airplane, its passengers and its crew for ransom these so called "hijackers" could force govern- ments to meet their outrageous demands of money or power. Flying has become something to befeared with hijackings possible any time anywhere. What can we do to eliminate this twentieth century piracy? How can it be stopped? These questions are being asked all over the, world and various measures have been taken to curtail, the activities of these air pirates before they leave the ground and while in the air, Most airports throughout the world are equipped with elec- tronic metal detectors to expose hidden weapons both in the luggage and those concealed on each passenger's body. These devices are not foolproof and it appears that someone who is truly serious about taking over an airplane can still get his weapons on board. Hijacking is a topic which has held a high 'priority with many governments. Some countries have placed the death penalty or long jail terms on hijackers in their countries. This, unfortun- ately, is not universal and various nations will still grant amnesty to sky pirates coming, into their countries. Now, however, after last month's spectacular hijacking by a radical guerrilla group which was finally ended by German commandos, the United. Nations has decided to see what they can do about the ever increasing problem. May be they will be able to draw up some form of Lesilation 'which will be accepted by all nations and will discourage potential hijackers. Maybe they can implement some new, and improved surveillance devices at airports. maybe they can stop this terrorism of the air. If the United Nations is successful in elminating sky piracy, flying may again become the safest method of long distance travel.
