Captain James and Mrs. Stretton
James Stretton was born in
Ireland. He married Jane
McCracken at Uxbridge Ontario
in 1854, before coming to
Brussels, and becoming one of
the developers of the village, He
received his Commission from
Queen Victoria in the early
1.Ws. Capt. Stretton built the
Queens Hotel and the Stretton
Block. This enterprise was
operated as one unit, the block
portion served as display and
sample rooms for the travellers.
Be owned and operated the stage
coach that travelled from Harris-
ton to Seaforth via Brussels. He
also owned the Stretton. Landl
Plan which is part of the village.
The Hotel was sold to Joseph
Querin in 1902. The block portion,
now owned by his grandson Herb
Stretton, has remained in the
family. The first home was a log
cabin, located where Herb
Stretton now lives. This cabin was
later destroyed by fire.The
present house was built by the
Captain's youngest . son W.F.
(Frank) Stretton in 1925. , The
Strettons had eight children and
are buried in the Brussels
Cemetery.
Walter Williamson
Walter Williamson was horn in
Winnipeg in 1888. He came to
Brussels as a young boy and
made . his home with his Uncle
Bill Smith, on the river bank
south pf the funeral home. He
apprenticed as a painter,
decorator and finisher with his
uncle. As a young man he spent
some time working in Listowel
and Toronto as a finisher. After
his marriage to Laura Cardiff
from the 8th con. of Grey, he
worked at hiS trade in the.
Brussels area for more than 50
years. He looked after the old
Brussels Arena from the timeof
of its construction in 1931 until
the early 60's. He was a former
councillor of Brussels and was
keenly interested in local affairs.
Walter was a member of the
United Church and is buried in
the Brussels Cemetery.
Harry E. McCutcheon
Harry was the son of Henry
McCutcheon and Annie Speiran
and was born on the 6th con. of
Morris Township. He married
Hannah Ward and they farmed on
the farm now owned by Ross
Nichol. They had a family of eight
boys and three girls. In 1942 he
moved to Brussels and carried on
an automotive repair business,
which he had started on the farm.
This was located first in the Old
Woollen Mill, or former Walter
Lowry Garage, which stood where
the medical building is now, then
the former Pope servicer Station
which is now the "Texan" and
then returned to the Lowry
Garage. After,. his death in 1946
the business was carried on by
members of the family and
evolved into McCutcheon Motors.
Two sons Lorne and Bill were
)(filed in an auto accident in 1953.
He was a member of the Anglican.
Church and is buried in the
McCutcheon Cemetery in Morris
Twp.
Mr. Douglas Smith
Doug was born at Lot 18 on
Con. 6 of Morris Twp., which is
still owned by the Smith family.
He married Ada Grasby from
Morris Twp. They had a family of
6 sons and one daughter. They
went north to the Timmins Area
and. Doug spent 8 years working
in the gold mines before
returning to the family farm. After
his death his widow moved to the
former Dr. Hamilton home on
Turnberry Street where she now
resides. Doug was Anglican in
faith and is buried in the Brussels
Cemetery.
Mr. & Mrs. Cleve Baeker
Cleve Baeker .was born in
Huronview
Brussels. He and his brother were
the operators of Baeker Bros.
Butcher shop for many years.
This b,usiness is now Thompson
and Stephenson. He married
Florence Thompson from
Brussels whose father ran a
grocery and bakery business in
what is now the north half of
Oldfield's hardware. They had
two children, one son and one
daughter. Their home was the
house north of the Lions Park now
owned by Ivan and Betty
Campbell. They were members of
the Presbyterian Church and are
buried in Brussels. Cemetery.
Mr. & Mrs. James Knight.
James Knight was born in 1815
on the Isle of Wight. He married
Sarah Whittington from the same
island. He was a farmer and
seeds man before coming to
Canada in the late 1850's. They
settled first in Usborne Twp. then
came to Grey in 1866, and lived
on part of Lot 15, .con 10. This
land is now farmed by their great
grandson Leslie Knight. The first
land owned by the family was half
of lot 18 con 10, which they
cleared and built the buildings,
most of which still remain. Larry
Smith lives on this farm today.
They' later also owned the Chas.
Bray farm. They were Methodists
in faith and are buried in the
Brussels Cemetery.

Members of the Clinton Christian Reformed Church formed
a choir for the Sunday evening song service led by Dick
Roorda.
Miss Eunice Lamb was welcomed to the Home at the
Monday afternoon program. The Goderich Township
Women's Institute volunteers assisted with the activities.
Mrs. Driver, Molly Cox, Norman Speir, Cecil Skinner and
Jerry Collins provided the old tyme music. Morgan Dalton
sang a solo number and helped to leadthe sing-a-long.
John Stev ley a member of the Clinton Legion Pipe Band
showed a film on Family Night of the tournament of roses
parade at Pasedena Californialhe one part of the film told the
story of the parade from its inception and was brought to this
area by the Mass Pipe Bands of South Western Ontario. The
tournament is of special interest to the residents of this area
this year is the mass bands plan to take part in the parade on
January 2, 1978."
The annual bazaar sponsored by the Huronview Auxiliary
was quite successful on Wednesday afternoon and was well
patronized by the public.
Mrs. Shirley Proutey of Exeter conducted the weekly bible
study accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Finkbeiner.
Reverand Pierce of Crediton assisted with devotions and Mrs.
Pierce sang a solo number. -
