(Continued from Page 4)
proofread, it is taken to the layout
room where the pages of the Post
are put together. Here, on a long
row of light tables, waxed sheets
of thick paper with the column
widths marked on them are
spread out.
'The wax acts as an adhesive
and the columns of copy are
trimmed and curt into position
around the advertisements. The
advertisements don't just
miraculously appear though.
They are put together earlier by
ad layout, people. These people
take different lines of type and
logos or signatures of various
businesses and combine them
imaginatively into the advertise-
ment ordered. The ads are then
laid out on the waxed sheets.
Photographs
Photographs are also very
much a partof the paper and the
process they go through is a
rather complicated one. The Post
develops and prints its own black
and white photographs. In order
to be picked up by the press, the
photographs have to be reshot
and changed to different shades
of dots. These "screened photo-
graphs" or PMT'S are also
positioned on the layout sheets.
Headlines
The last step in the layout room
is writing the headlines. The
number of letters that can be used

headline and the number of
columns it runs across. The
headlines are typed into a
headliner machine which works
on the same principle as the
typesetter.
Large camera
After the headlines are
positioned and the type straight-
ened, the layout -page is placed
under a "camera", which is
about three feet long and two feet
wide, and a negative the size of
the page is shot.
Once processed in three
different chemicals the negatives
are dried. Each' negative is
examined for any scratches or
clear spots, which would come out
as black marks on the printed
pages. The scratches are covered
with an opaque paint.
Printed in Goderich
Goderich is the next destination
for the paper and where all the
negatives are taken to the Signal
Star printing prpsses. The
negatives are put together with
sensitized aluminum plate and
put under an arc light. The clear
areas on the negative allow the
light, through, burning the image
into the plate.
The plates are processed and
then fitted on the 'press, where
only the areas that have been
"burned" pick up the ink and
transfer it to the newsprint.
Although the layout work takes
hours, the actual printing of the
more than one thousand Brussel
Posts takes a matter of minutes.
Addressed
After its Tuesday night printing
date in Goderich, the Posts are
put through a stencil machine and
addressed to each subscriber.
Then they are sorted into mail
bags, one for each community or
rural route the Post serves and
are 'sent to the Post Office
Wednesday. Also on Wednesday,
the Brussels Post is delivered to
stores in Brussels who sell the
paper over the counter.
