Perfect autumn weather
contributed to a record entry and
an enthusiastic attendanle when
the Huron Plowmen's Association
held its annual match on
Saturday.
The fact that Huron will host
the OPA International next year
likely was a factor in the
increased entry, officials said. A
number of • those taking part
Saturday plan to compete in the
International next year and
wanted added experience.
Staged at the 'Stephen
Township farm of Allan Walper at
the southern extremity of the
county, the event attracted added
attention by many who were
interested in seeing the solar
heating installation by which Mr.
Walper provides the heat
required' for his residence.
While proficiency in plowing
was the basis in which most
events were judged, there was
keen competition in other events
throughout the afternoon.
Highlighting the non plowing
features was the ,Queen of the
Furrow contest which was won by
Lori Stafford, 17, of R.R. 1,
Wroxeter who went on to win top
.,honours in the women's nail
driving contest.
Runner up in the Queen contest
was Kathy Pentland, R.R. 6,
Goderich while runner up in the
nail, driving event were Marlene
Hayter, Dashwood and Mrs. Cliff
Bray, Ethel.
Men's nail driving contest was
won by Sam Docherty. Other
winners . were Roy Scotchmer,
Goderich, Andy White, McKillop,
Ray Bennett, Wingham and
Anson McKinley, Zurich.
Wm. Leeming, Walton and Reg.
Bennett, Wingham were best in
the log sawing contest followed
closely by Doug and Tom. Russel
of Dashwood and Grant and
Harry Snell of • Londesboro.
In the class 2. log sawing event,
the Snells came first. Other
winners were Wm. Leeming and
Ray Bennett and Don Pullen,
Clinton and Ray Scotchmer,
Bayfield.•
Horseshoe pitching honors in
class 1 went to Harold Carter and
Alex Boa of Goderich with Keith
Lovell, Kippen and Floyd Venner,
Hensall, in third place.
In the class 2 event, Alonzo
Harburn and 'John Wilkinson of
St. Marys came first followed by
Stan Pearn. and Hiram Knott of
St. Thomas and Harold Salt,
Mitchell paired with Brown
Sanders, Exeter.
Brian McGavin of R.R. 4,
Walton was the over-all junior
champion, and Ken Innes of
Brussels the senior champion.
Steve Walper of Grand Bend won
the international special class.
Reeve John Tinney of Hay
Township won the businessman's
class for local dignitaries and
non-farmers. Entrants in this
section used horse-drawn plows.
Cash prizes were awarded the,
top five plowmen in each of the 10
classes.
