A mystery
It's only fair
Mos Ontario tax payers will be delighted at the
tightening up of the Ontario student grant program,
announced last week by education minister, Dr.
Harry Parrott.
That's because Ontario tax payers with college or
university aged children or friends have heard
stories or seen proof of students who take the
existing program for a ride. Tales of mid-winter
breaks in the sunny south, ski trips to the west of
Europe, and, at least in more prosperous times,
speculating in the stock market with student loan and
grant money, have been around for some time. And
they aren't all tall tales. Many abuses of the program
can be documented.
Dr. Parrott says spot checks that showed things
like overpayments of 25 per cent of 1974 student loan
applicants and 66 per cent of a sample of 1975
applicants who received more than $1 million with
"unsatisfactory" applications were a factor in
setting new rules for the loan and grant program.
The new regulations haven't been clearly defined
yet, but nobody can quarrel with a provision that
applicants and their parents may be required to
submit copies of their income tax returns. Any
student with a truthful student grant application will
have nothing to lose by backing up his figures.
Any student who is applying for a loan and grant in
the hopes of getting a little extra throw around
money will not be able to get away with a falsified
application ... unless his or her income tax return is
equally fictional.
Dr. Parrott says he gets more complaints about
cheating on student loans than about any other area
of his ministry.That's quite understandable.
The pulic does not want really needy and capable
students to do without higher education because of
lack of funds. The new rules will make things easier
for those really in need by not insisting that they
have a repayable loan in order to get a grant.
But the public doesn't want to pick up the tab for
well off students whose tax returns show they could
easily pay for their own education. The new student
loan safeguards which will involve an estimated $74'
million in provincial grants as well as $100 million in
,federal student loans should meet both those
conditions.

I've been keeping company with the
saints lately. •Not that I've gone out of my
way to find them, but it's this job I have. I
was only doing my duty trying to get a
radio interview with Benny Hinn.
Maybe you haven't heard of him. He's a
Toronto evangelist who's into a healing
ministry. Something like Kathryn
Kuhlman -- not real dynamite, but forceful,
soothing, helfful and healing.
Now, don't get me wrong. I didn't need
Benny for ply sore tennis elbow. I needed
him to talk about himself. He's rather
unique,. He's an Israeli Jew who converted,
to Christianity.And that doesn't happen
every day.
I wanted to talk to him about being a
Jewish preacher in a Gentile world. I
wanted to find out if he could really stop
being Jewish even though he believed in
Jesus. For the truth is "Jewish" isn't a
denominational tag.
In North America we want to make neat
religious labels. Protestant. Catholic,
Jewish. But Jewishness involves so much
more than religion. It involves a people, a
community, a history, a tradition and a
culture.
You just don't stop being Jewish. I rather
think a person is forever Jewish.
That's what I. wanted to find out from
Benny Hinn. But Benny's a busy man.
Yes, he'd be glad to see me that night. But
he had a revival meeting first. Why. don't I
go to that and then I'd interview him
afterwards?
Well, why not? As .I say; lately I've been
in the company of saints. 1 somehow am
drawn to those revival preachers. Is it my
own propensity for human dynamics? To
hear a message well crafted and delivered?
To watch 'that certain amount of ego
combine with performance? To feel a whole
crowd of people Moved to action by the
power of one personality?
And I promise to say nice things about
Benny Hinn and all the saints.
Last week I got all fired up about some
tent preachers. One editor thought I'd
sizzle the pages of her newspaper. Start a
bonfire. She said no roast preacher in her
newspapers.
So I protnsie I'll say Benny Hinn's a nice
guy. A young man. Slight. Good looking.
Handsomely dark. Sharp clreset. Red tie
and vest. Shoes polished. He's not
flamboyant. He does pace around up front
with his microphone: ever in his hands.
That keeps his aims in check; but his free
hand can shake Out tond finger Snaps.
Benny's a preacher for Jesus a long
talking one, too. For one whole hour he
preached and for another two hours he
healed,
He healed right befote our eyes. Now
the trouble wag. I Was sitting way up in the
balcony: there's an audio recording
control board Where tape reCording people
have to sit. But, oh, if I were only closer as.
he laid his hand on the sick and said, "I
rebuke your cancer!'. "I rebuke your back,
trouble". He told the diseases to remove
themselves -- not in sharp commanding
tones, but almost softly And gently he
eased the pains away.
But oh to be nearer! What I really want
wanted to watch with Benny was the
afterwards—when he finished, and the
people were standing in front of him.
Now, I've heard of people falling for you.
Falling Aoward you. You know, they
stumble and fall toward you. But would you
believe? All of Benny Hinn's healed fell '
away from him. Every single one of them.
-There they were One second they were
upright. Speaking into his microphone and
telling how much better they felt and then
the next second a sway, a rocking to and
fro and whoop's --watch out-- there they go
-- legs straight together and their stiffened
.body falling backwards to the floor.
I rubbed my eyes the first time I saw a
man and his wife fall backwards together to
the floor. ,Here, the man had just testified
to a complete healing at one of Benny's,
other meeting.s His wife even offered a
doctor's corroboration for it.And then,
boom. His wife fell backwards. Then boom.-
He fell backwards.
Benny helped them to their feet again.
Then. Boom. Boom. Together they were on
the floor again. All Benny said as they left
'the platform was "You must be excited".
Well, let me tell ; you, everyone got
excited in the Same Way., They all fell
backwards. After the first 'few toppled
ov er, Benny removed the chairs on the
platform fot 'more falling-back room. No
one broke his fall with bent knees, or
,8eolbldoiwer. s.s TheY all fell backwards like stiff.
I got carried. away watching all those
People fall over. I forgot about the miracle
of healing backs and eancer. The real
miracel was falling backwards: Would they
or wouldn't they? And by golly, everyone
did. Everyone proved a miracle -- all of
them.
Iomi never interviewed Benny that night. At
11:30 his meeting was still going. Boom.
