Sports Club Wingham tournament biggest yet One of the largest midget hockey tournaments in Ontario will be held at Wingham during the school 'Winter Break'. The 14th annual Wingham Midget Hockey Tournament will be increased from 32 teams to 56 this year. All the defending champions in the "AAA", "A", "B" and "C" categories will be back looking for their second straight title. They will get ' some. good oppositiOn from the Other teams in each group. The "AAA" category had the least number of teams entered but the eight teams so far are very evenly matched. With the smaller, number of teams, the champion- ship game will be played at the Wingham Arena on Tuesday, March 22 at 9 p.m. With the increase in number of teams entered, the tournament will be- played on three ice 'surfaces. A total of 16 games will be played at the Howick Community Centre, an arena which is 14 miles north of Wingham on Highway 87. There will also be 13 games played at the arena in Lucknow, a village 11 miles west of Wingham on Highway 86. Most of these games will be played on the opening weekend of the 10-day tournament. Two of the games at Howick will be played on Thursday, March 24. Billeting for the players will be in Wingham and the surrounding area. With the tournament still a month and a half away the response from the citizens has been great. Citizens are getting behind the venture and are very enthusiastic about the way the tournament has increased over the years. The committee has been getting terrific support from all the various clubs, groups and' everyone who, in any way, can help them make this a huge success. The Howick Community Centre is a new arena which has been open for just two seasons. The Wingham Area has had a face lifting and will be in top shape for the tournament. The ice surface is larger than it was, by 10 feet wide and about 15 feet long. The players benches, timekeepers bench and penalty box are now all on the same side of the rink. There has been a new floor installed and the entire building is_now up to the standard of a lot of Places much bigger than Wingham. It has cost , a lot of money to renovate but the citizens of Wingham feel it has all been worthwhile. Figure skaters win awards The Brussels Figure Skating Club held a club competition for its members in the Brussels Arena. Thursdy. Trophies, medals and or ribbons were presented to the first three winners in the various groups. Winners were: Group 1 (beginners) 1. Craig Smith; 2 . -1D avid Cowman; 3-Blaine Marks. Group 2 - 1- Pam Nolan; 2-Dianne Hall; 3-John Marc Quesnel. Group 3-1-Chrissie Achilles; 2-Marjorie Campbell; 3-Joy Anne Van Vliet. Group 4. - 1-Wayne Wheeler; 2-Susie Smith; 3-Carla King. Group 5 -1-Brian Wheeler; 2-Bradley Black; 3-Pam Sugg. Judges were Faye MacDonald, Catharine Cardiff and Cindy Evans - Novice IDance Pair - 1-Robbie Cardiff and Bonnie Evans; 2-Julie MacDonald & Joanne Knight. 3 - Greg Campbell & Brenda Tenpas. Junior.
