But he didn’t stop there, for before the next line had a chance to come on, he put the finishing touches on the puck, placing it in the opponents’ net for the third time. Later on, after numerous at- temps by everyone, Ronnie Abell- Rinn scored the next goal to make it 4 - 0 for Blyth. Then Jeff Cowan got downtohis usual business once more, making the score 5 - 0 for Blyth. Then, after numerous attempts throughout the day, along with all of his assists for the day, ‘ ‘ Sparky” Mark Wilson took the puck on a breakaway and stick-handled it all the way down the ice from Blyth’s blue-line, to plant it snuggly into Tiverton’s net, to obtain an Novices lose 2-1 Continued from page 12 frame - things looked bleak for the Blyth squad until the final minute of the period as they awoke with a flurry by scoring two exciting goals in 40 seconds to pull even with Belmont, heading into the third. Jason Rutledge and Peter Craig picked up assists on the first goal as they passed to defenceman Jona than Collins. Jon then scored on the shot from the blueline as the goalie watched helplessly as the puck crossed the>goal line. This goal sparked the Blyth team as they continued to apply pressure in the Belmont zone. Chris Howson then set up Brian McNichol for the tying goal with only four seconds left in the period as Brian swept behind the Belmont goal and stuffed the puck between the goalie’s pad and the goalpost. After a between periods pep talk, the team came out flying for the third, and eventually scored three unanswered goals to come from behindinthis5-2 victory. Brian McNichol scored his second goal of the game to give Blyth the lead thanks to a heads-up pass from Peter Craig. Then with one minute and 18 seconds left in the game Ryan Chamney scored an insurance market to give Blyth a 4 - 2 lead with linemates Scott Arthur and Jason Rutledge garnering some very important assists. Finally, with only 14 seconds left in the game, Blyth added their final goal as team leader for the day, Brian McNichol, recorded his third goal of the game. Brian added another notch to his stick for this hat trick as hard working Frederick Datema, who showed his versatil ity by playing forward for the day, played a major role by assisting on this short handed tally. Blyth started very slowly on this game but, with some breaks, gained momentum as the match progressed. With the victory Blyth advanced to play Ilderton, needing a tie or a win to advance to the semi-finals in this round robin affair. Blyth played one of the fastest and one of the most exciting hockey games that I have had the unassisted and well-deserved goal. After the numerous attempts he made all day, the smile on his face said it all - * ‘This one paid off and counts!” As Mark was hot, it had to be contagious as the remainder of the team shared it also. Especially Jeff Cowan, scor ing his sixth (two hat tricks in one game)goalfor the game and his tenth goal for the day, only four seconds after the puck was dropp ed again after Sparkie’s goal! Blyth then went on to earn a shut-out vs. Tiverton, with the final score being 8 - 0. A special note goes out to the team members who were ill and unable to attend - Jeff Ferguson, Darryl Bromley and Amanda Anderson and everyone hopes that they are well and on their skates again soon. pleasureofwatching this year. The two teams never stopped skating or hustling until the final buzzer sounded with Blyth skating off the ice with their heads held high in an extraordinary 2 - 1 defeat to an equally fine team from Ilderton. After a scoreless first period, Blyth opened the scoring in the second period as they scored their only goal of the game. After another fine set-up from Peter Craig, Christopher Howson found himself alone in front of the Ilderton goalie and the corner of the net on a devastating wrist shot. Blyth continued to press and they had some excellent scoring chang es but couldn’t capitalize on them. Three times Blyth players found themselves alone in front of the net and shot the puck over the top of the net. Add to that, some excellent shots that dinged off the goalposts and crossbar and you could almost sense that Blyth was up against some very stiff odds. Once again the Blyth goalies played a fantastic game as they continuously turned back the Ilderton attack and were the subject of some very fine accolades from the many fans in attendance. However, Ilderton tied the score before the second frame ended and scored the only goal of the third period, on a power play, to glide away with a 2 - 1 victory. As I’ve said before, the Blyth team put a sensational effort into these two games and deserved a much better fate. Hats off and congratulationstoChris, Mike, Peter, Jonathan, Mark, Ryan, Jason, Frederick, Brian, Scott and Christopher Lee for a monumental effort in one of the most prestigious hockey tournaments in Ontario. Thanks also to the coaching staff and the many fans from Blyth and Auburn, who travelled to Parkhill for this Silver Stick Celebration. To those who couldn't make...you missed a beauty, eh?? The novice team’s schedule is slowed down somewhat until the holiday festivi ties close out and do not have a scheduled game until January 7th, when Elma Logan visits Blyth for a 7 o’clock contest. Fourth, I think it is time we guys shed our insecure male egos and started treating women as the equals they are. However, I don’t believe anyone will pay me or my wife for staying home to raise our children nor do I think that child care of the family who chooses to have both parents in the work force should be paid for by my tax dollar. Fifth, I believe we should all love (agape) one another regardless of circumstances. However, this does not mean we should accept the immoral habits of homosexuals but we should accept and love them as people. __ I think that anyone finding it necessary to discriminate against homosexuals just for the sake of doing so should take a long hard look at themselves, possibly with the help of a professional. But please, do not take away my right to raise my child in a moral Christian fashion in what was once a moral Christian society. No, I did not write this letter becauselhavealltheanswers. I believe most of the issues are raised because someone is afraid someone else is getting more than themselves. Until we learn that the only good in having is giving, we will continue to fight for our rights until we have no personal rights to fight with. I truly believe that any law put in place to guarantee one person’s personal rights that interferes with some one else’s rights is simply an intrusion on all of us. Can anyone begin to imagine the harmony and true state of unsel fishness we could all live in if we would only learn to consider other people’s rights for a short time before concerning ourselves with our own rights.
