The Citizen, 1986-12-30, Page 14PAGE 14. THE CITIZEN, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1986. Times were happier when Federal Agriculture Minister John Wise visited Huron in February to talk to Huron County cattlemen in Clinton. Later in the year he was back in the county to inspect crop damage from six weeks of torrential rain. Wheat shipments set record Ontario Wheat handling at the Goderich Elevators was a record 180,000 tonnes in 1986, breaking last year’s record of 169,000 tonnes, according to the first half interim financial statement releas ed recently by President and Chief Executive Officer George Parsons. With The Great Lakes naviga tion season entering its final few weeks, the company has issued an optimistic report on the success of the 1986 shipping season locally. Of the pre tax profit of $1,049, 687 being reported for the first six months, $668,580 was generated at Goderich, $370,072 was gener ated at Port Colborne and $11,035 by Clinton Aviation Ltd., a small subsidiary. Netincomesforthe period of $545,687 or $1.63 per share, compare with $447,052 or $1.33 for the same period in 1985. The newly-acquired leased Association plans Kentucky trip The Huron Soil and Crop Improvement Association invites producers to attend the Kentucky Farm Show from February 12 -15, 1987. The show is one of the largest and best farm machinery shows in the United States. One of the real attractions of the show besides the large company lines ofequipment are the many farmers who will be there who have developed equipment. The show is operation at Port Colborne has performed well and slightly ahead of target for the first two months at least, said the report dated Nov. 19. While wheat handling proved profitable this year, the outlook for corn is not so good. “Canada’s corn price is just not competitive in the limited world markets and for the first year in many, we may not export corn this fall,’’ said Parsons’ report. Parsons also noted that a union workers strike at Thunder Bay did not aversely affect the Goderich Elevators and reports that the union contract at Goderich was settledfortwoyears at approxi mately three per cent annually. On January 1, Parsons will begin a phased retirement. Concurrent ly, James Eric Kirk, an Elevator employee for nine years, will be a good opportunity to gain ideas and develop contacts. The Huron Soil and Crop Improvement Association has ar ranged, with the Lucknow District Co-op and Forest Travel Service, a four-day bus trip to the farm show. Cost is $225 which includes bus travel, three nights accommoda tion, two days at the farm show, tractor pull and travel insurance. appointed general manager. Vers ed in engineering and business, Kirk will be conducting more of the day to day business and will continue to be responsible for the Port Colborne operation. Parsons will remain as president and chief executive officer to ensure contin uity in management.
