Farmers can help farmers BY LERA RYAN FAMILY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST O.M.A.A.F. ‘ ‘The day of the auction sale was the worst day of my life” said a farmer who was forced to liquidate his business. The process of leaving the farm is much more than just a business decision. It may involve several major changes -- making a new home, finding employment, adjusting to an urban community -- as well as the complicated financial affairs asso ciated with the farm. We all resist change to some extent, and people differ in their ability to adjust to changes. Children, as well as parents, fear what may happen, and may feel some guilt for the difficulties the family is having. Farming can be a very lonely occupation when the bank is threatening foreclosure, when cre ditors are closing accounts and the farm couple just doesn’t know what todo next. Many farm couples who have already handled a bankrupt cy, a liquidation or a transition to employment are offering support to other families through self-help groups. A group of six or eight people who trust each other and are personally committed to each other’s well-being offer a safe, comfortable haven to work out solutions together. A place to express fears and feelings and to work through some anger and guilt in a confidential setting can provide a great deal of relief. Once a couple realizes that their own physical and mental health and their family are top priorities, even ifthe business no longer exists, they have gained a major step. Then essential and informed deci sions will be easier to make. Being able to assess a situation objective ly, without the overlay of personal feelings is very difficult. A small group can help a person see the real situation, just as he would look at someone else’s. There is an opportunity to help others. Some laughter and some relaxation can relieve a lot of tension too. Sometimesforeclosure proceed ings drag on for months. The fear of the unknown builds stress in anyone. Handling the financial situation is a challenge, but controlling emotions may be a bigger challenge. Personal rela tionships often become strained. It is not unusual for a build-up of stress over several months to cause physical illness. Families aren’t expected to handle stressful situations on their own. Churches and extension people in some areas are getting people together in small suppor tive groups. Individuals them selves should accept some respon sibility for theirown well being and that of their friends. They should seek out a small number of persons to share some time helping each other. The knowledge and pro blem-solving efforts of such a small group can provide acceptance of emotions and difficulties, support, encouragement, and a renewed self-confidence in each of its members. His office number is 357-2463, but take care, his staff can be very plausible with their explanations of “treating everyone equally.” Peter Edisbury RR 5, Lucknow. P.S.
